Walter M (gb) wrote: Even though "The Watermelon Woman" is quite unpolished, writer-director Cheryl Dunye still manages to create a realistic fictional history in it to explore themes of race and sexuality while paralleling that with a fictional present where she plays Cheryl who works at a video store with her pal Tamara(Valarie Walker) and as videographers. Tamara tries to set her up on a blind date at a karaoke bar but it goes disastrously wrong.(Surprisingly, even worse than the usual karaoke nightmare.) Unexpectedly, Cheryl finds herself attracted to Diana(Guinevere Turner) who is new to Philadelphia. Cheryl also has dreams of becoming a filmmaker and has decided to focus on The Watermelon Woman(Lisa Marie Bronson), nee Fae Richards, who was featured in Hollywood films as a stereotypical black maid and more three dimensional roles in race films. What Dunye does well is give a tantalizing glimpse at a lost world while debating whether or not actors like Fae were positive or negative role models. Adding versimilitude to the proceedings are interviews with Dunye's mother and Camille Paglia, about whom the reality of is debatable. For example, what does a watermelon having the same colors as the Italian flag have to do with anything?

Jules H (gb) wrote: It's sad and depressing nature doesn't exactly do the film's happy eco babble theme justice. However, the film does have enough sentimental moments and great character interraction to make for a passable and fun film. The animation is brisk and eye pleasing to boot. All in all, Once Upon a Forest is a captivating film, despite being noticably melodramatic.

Kayla K (br) wrote: According to IMDB, the character Burke is a ghost come back to get revenge for his wrongful execution. I couldn't really tell that from the story, though he did look like the guy. The prison was super creepy, and it inmates were so forgivable that you were on the side of the state agent who wanted to rehibilitate them. The very likable Lane Smith played the warden who became less likable with every action. There are some terrorific death scenes... the best involving pipes and air tubing. The plot points happening during some of the action occasionally left me with the "oh no! I missed something important by being distracted by bright lights!" kind of feeling.
Oliver E (gb) wrote: really good, only, I think it would have been better as a short film, timing somewhere around 30min or so? It just gets very tedious and monotonous to watch for over an hour.
Greg S (nl) wrote: A sadist who puts on a Grand Guignol off-off-Broadway show as a cover for his white slavery ring kidnaps a theater critic and a ballerina to design his greatest production yet; the plot is just an excuse to show naked women humiliated, tortured and killed. It's a comedy aimed at two groups: those who get aroused by seeing females gruesomely killed, and those who take pride in their capacity to laugh at human suffering.
Alex S (fr) wrote: Horrible, horrible movie. At no point did I laugh. It tried to succeed on raunch and edgy jokes, but the jokes come off less as edgy and more as overused, recycled gags. The animation is painful to look at and the whole movie never has a shred of wit. Highly unrecommended.
