Working as a prostitute since she was 16, Kam has witnessed the highs and lows of Hong Kong over the decades. Kamis now a “madam” who manages a stable of high-end prostitutes, entertaining and hosting parties for rich men. She has seen it all. On the surface she embraces the prosperity of the ‘New HK’ but like countless middle-class HK citizens, she laments the lossof the old Hong Kong that once belonged to the people. Over the hill mob boss, Gordon, was put behind bars before the Hong Kong Handover in 1997. Gordon’s appearance and mindset are still stuck in the colonial past. Recently released from prison, he is unable to cope with the New Hong Kong. His sole source of solace is his old flame, Kam.

I do not say this lightly, but this movie is as close to perfection as it gets. The script is very intelligent and sets up a deep dilemma that I did not completely understand until the very end of the movie. What a great payoff! The cinematography and direction are exemplary of what a visual medium is all about, and making not only a silent movie but shooting it in black and white was a daring and the right call in 2011. The cast is adorable, every character highly memorable and the performances are convincing and moving all the way. One of the best movies I've ever seen.

And Michael Shannon is pitch perfect. Between this role, "Bug" & "Revolutionary Road"; I feel a special kinship with the characters he plays.
Dave H (ag) wrote: Great cast, and Costner especially delivers a good perf, but the film is strangely lethargic. The violence and crim-cool-vibe aspire to be Tarantinoesqe, but this effort has little of QTs style, humour and fascination, leaving nastiness and a bitter taste in the mouth. Odd, interesting in parts, but only just worthwhile. Better dialogue and more likeable characters would've helped.
