Michael D (br) wrote: Disappointing. The first 45 minutes are classic Jodorowski but i like him better without the shackles of having to tell a 'conventional' story and the second half here, although it has its moments, is overlong and a predictable, insipid Freudian melodrama .Still - it is Jodorowsky and if you haven't seen his earlier movies maybe not a bad introduction to his work.

In all the musicals I have seen over the years (and this isn't really a musical at all), never have I ever seen such a seemless and plausible transition from traditional film storytelling to storytelling through dance. This is what all musicals struggle with, and this adapted opera turned flamenco film manages to do so in a magical way. I would say this is the best dance film I have ever seen.

Although I didn't like any of the characters (pretty much everyone in the film makes poor decisions in such a life-threatening situation), I have to say that there are times in the film that I was genuinely scared. Kudos to the filmmakers. It's kind of brilliant in its own way.
