You can definitely see all the influences this film had on Kill Bill Vol. 1, specifically, including the blood effects which explode like geysers and the main character seems to be the inspiration for Oren Ishii (Lucy Liu's character), though there are other similarities as well. However, this film is not perfect, due to the fact that I feel that it tried to cram too much story into a short running time of 97 minutes (The story feels like it could have only been developed fully if the film had been 2-2.5 hours long). Still, the film is a very engaging revenge film with solid acting, good direction, plentiful amounts of gore and sword fights, and some interesting twists thrown into the plot for good measure. It's a fun revenge film that is worth seeing if you want to see what inspired the now-classic Kill Bill films.

It's not a terribly enjoyable film, but this is Godard and Gorin coming off of a four-year stint making inaccessible Marxist experimental films, so you shouldn't walk into this one expecting to have a lot of fun. And for a movie that was supposedly written by Gorin, there's a surprisingly small amount of profanity in it, so that's a shame.

Heath Ledger (RIP) and Jake Gyllenhaal did and AMAZING job showing that passion they characters felt in the movie. The love is the strongest and powerful feeling in the world.
