Tim H (au) wrote: Disappointing adaptation of an amazing novel by Dean Koontz. Everyone seems miscast.

Donald D (ru) wrote: If I were to give an Oscar for the best ever--best of all time!--performance by a woman in a motion picture, I would choose Mary Tyler Moore for her performance as Beth in "Ordinary People." Robert Redford casts her against type--brilliantly. Unlike Mary Richard of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," Beth cannot be happy, cannot really smile or laugh. Nor can she love. When her husband Calvin, played convincingly by Donald Sutherland, asks her whether she loves him, Beth replies, "I feel about you as I always have." The critical consensus states that the film is "shot through with bitterness and sorrow." That's a distortion. There is bitterness and sorrow, but there is far more love and understanding--in part through the characters played by Judd Hirsch and Elizabeth McGovern. This is a GREAT movie, in my all-time Top Ten.

Paul R (ca) wrote: Not bad, but man do they trash Kansas. I hope kansas wasn't like that.

Ben H (gb) wrote: Astonishing opening scene and equally astonishing climax make this gothic noir a must see. Bernard Herrmann's piano concerto and beautiful photography from Joseph LaShelle provide a perfect backdrop. Some of the acting is a bit hammy at times, though Cregar manages to hold it together, and Darnell does admirably as a femme fatale.

Paul D (nl) wrote: Fred & Ginger spend very little on-screen time together in their first film together, however it is not about them despite giving some decent supporting roles. It's an ambitious but well produced musical comedy for the time it was made, making great use of sound which was still a fairly new phenomena, and better than average for this period.
