(mx) wrote: Originality can't be everything that a film has going for it, and I'm all about random endings that don't make a lot of sense...except when they really need one. Just when it seemed the ending might redeem the rest of the "okay" film, it begins to get REALLY ridiculous with a horrible fight scene and a conclusion that just leaves you saying "what?" and not in a good way.

They certainly hone their skills in subsequent films, but it's all done very well here: the realist, mostly subjective camera, the lack of music, the simple but profound narrative structure. As in their later films, here we have a character coming out of his self-centered view of the world to make contact with another human being, a beautiful and transformative process.
