Tanner B (ag) wrote: Fantastic Four (2005) C-106m. BOMB D: Tim Story. Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba. Inauspicious adaptation of familiar Stan Lee/ Jack Kirby superhero comic books with familiar character competitions, one-liners, evil masterminds. Nothing escapes heavy-handedness. Definitely one time you should read the comics instead. You know something's wrong when a film makes Jessica Alba invisible. "Extended edition" runs 125m. Sequel: FANTASTIC 4: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER.

Yet Preston Sturges could handle the seismic shifts between the lightweight comedic and the unbearably tragic like few others. He's also one of the first writer-directors in an era in which the two - like singing and songwriting - were exclusively different vocations. "Sullivan's Travels" may be his greatest movie (vying with the immaculate likes of "The Lady Eve" and "The Great McGinty") and showcases his panoptic talents for screwball comedy, socially conscious sincerity, and lightning-paced repartee. Star Joel McCrea is John L. Sullivan, a movie director with itchy feet who - like Swift's Gulliver - is off on a voyage, both in literal terms, and in the terms of self-discovery. McCrea was one of the most prolific of Hollywood's stalwarts (appearing in over 90 films in 50 years), yet even he turned down the chance to work with his "Sullivan's Travels" leading lady again. To wit: "Life is too short to make two movies with Veronica Lake."
