Hard asfalt

Hard asfalt

This melodrama is based on the best-selling autobiography of Ida Halvorsen, a part-time prostitute with a life that was difficult to survive. Ida (Kristin Kajander) grew up with an alcoholic father, and after she married an alcoholic, her life went from early marital bliss to misery. She had a child during that marriage, took drugs, and turned to prostitution to get the money she needed. Along the way, many characters she met were dangerous and in more than one instance almost killed her. For Norwegians who are familiar with her story, the ending to the film will be recognized as incomplete, the story continues. For other audiences the ending might be a little grim.

Surely, the story of two lads, with one being extremely influenced and misled by Nietzsche's philosophy, wanting to commit a perfect crime that ends up with the murder of a child is appealing in itself. But its execution can make a world of difference. The director succeeds extensively to create a compelling thriller sticking to the facts as closely as possible. However, there's an element missing that could have made it better than what it is; IDK exactly, maybe the lack of details about the victim and his family. Of course, the movie's about the awesome twosome, but a wee-bit footage to the victim wouldn't have harmed much. I didn't find Welles' speech against capital punishment that interesting, but his response to Artie's reaction on the verdict is indeed remarkable. I went for it hesitantly, thanks to IMDb message board, but without a hesitation I'd admit that I've no remorse over my decision. As far as I'm concerned, it's a great deal for 75+ minutes. Well, to each, their own.

He's the Tramp of France, and the pantomiming genius that is Mon Oncle. A whimsical, off-beat, sometimes adorable and most times goofy series of comic vignettes. Unlike a lot of American slapstick comedy, however, it has a gentle side. Listen, any movie that opens and closes with puppy dogs frolicking through Paris has got to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Ashley H (de) wrote: William Asher's Beach Blanket Bingo is probably the best, and certainly the most entertaining, of the beach party movies. For once, the script is actually funny, not just stupid, and the presence of Buster Keaton, Timothy Carey and Harvey Lembeck as Von Zipper, adds a lot to the camp value and a young Linda Evans adds her own exotic beauty. Annette Funicello looks great, Frankie Avalon seems to have a tan and the late, great, John Ashley adds to the fun. This isn't Shakespeare, but the script is clever, and this has the best songs in the film, with the great Les Baxter actually having a hand in the songs and their arrangements in addition to his usual scoring duties.
