The opening is fantastic.. it feels realistic enough in how a military squad would traverse a zombie infested set of warehouses and the characters behave like real human beings for a change (even picking up weapons and conserving ammo). The split comes when a character makes a ridiculous jump and breaks the realism and it;s's all down hill from there. The ethic of the opening breaks and people does and say stupid things and it turns into a shambles of cliche and rote plot. A damn shame but still worthy of praise for what the opening accomplished.

(ru) wrote: Clearly there was bonafied talent involved in the making of this film. It features individual elements of creativity. The visual fx were impressive, the use of comicbook editing was clever in theory, the psychological subtexts were thoughtful, the acting for the most part were solid, and the direction by Ang Lee was of course sure handed. The problem is that all of these elements put together resulted in a mixbag that was tone-deaf and just doesn't work. It wants to be serious and psychological yet deliver "fun" and almost campy popcorn spectacle and thrills involving a big green cartoony rage monster. The film's various elements are always at odds, because it wants to be too many different things at once resulting in a schizophrenic film that doesn't gel and collapses under the weight of it's own pretentiousness. Not to mention that just about every scene's momentum is ruined by the oh so clever comicbook style editing.A Hulk film should be fun, and this movie is just not fun at all. It's about a big green angry guy... A bit of humor goes a long way. It's a joyless slog that has morsels of potential sprinkled throughout. An ambitious misfire.
