Gavin S (fr) wrote: Fantastic piece of acting by the always super Hal Holbrook. The story of a man at the end of his road in life reflecting back and refusing to go off quietly into his senior's home. A grumpy old codger like I always aim to be, so I loved him right off the top. After breaking out of the old folks home, he gets to his farm to discover his son has leased it out to a ne'er do well drunkard who spends his days drinking and doing a lot of nothing. Abner (Holbrook) refuses to leave, saying it's his home, and sets up in the Sharecroper's shack next to the farmhouse. It's here that the battle of wills really begins. Great to just sit back and watch the 2 of them go at it. This was also the last film work of the late Dixie Carter, Holbrook's real life wife, who plays his now deceased wife in the film, which adds even more poigniancy. Barry Corbin of Northern Exposure fame supports as Abner's neighbour. Great to see that older actors aren't relegated to the sidelines. Shares some similarities with Clint's 'Gran Torino', vis-a-vis old widowed men adjusting to new realities while maintaining their morals from bygone eras. To top it off, fantastic music from Patterson Hood (Drive By Truckers) makes this a great piece of Southern filmmaking that could take place anywhere and apply to most men of that age. Highly recommended.

Kevin R (es) wrote: You know you've been kind of a stick in the mud this entire trip!Kenai and Koda are still brothers and best friends and they feel perfectly happy together and that they don't need anything else. One day they come across Nita, a former girlfriend of Kenai's from when he was human. She is tied to him by a sacred promise and amulet they exchanged as children and they now need to destroy the amulet so Nita can marry another. Kenai, Koda, and Nita will embark on an adventure to destroy the amulet."Once you fall in love with someone, they stay in your heart forever."Ben Gluck, director of Alpha and Omega, delivers Brother Bear 2 in his major motion picture debut. The storyline for this movie is fairly average and not too far of a stretch from the first film. The animation style is okay and as you'd expect from a Disney sequel."We rob from the rich and give to the less fortunate!"My daughter and I grabbed this off Netflix last week as she fairly enjoyed the original. She did find it entertaining and watched it all the way through. I did feel they weren't creative enough with the plot but that seems consistent with the Disney sequels. Overall, this is worth watching with your children once but I wouldn't purchase it."Don't encourage them!"Grade: C

Kem W (de) wrote: Sweet and touching, whimsical and bright-spirited, Millions is the story of two English brothers who encounter a huge bag full of money, 265,000 euros in all. Each has a different idea about how to spend it. Damian, the younger, just wants to do good, such as treating a crowd of homeless to lunch at Pizza Hut and stuffing wads through the front mail slot of a house of Mormon missionaries. (What they do with the money is hilarious). Anthony, the elder, sees the money as salve for hurts received in a tempestuous new environment using it to buy friends and merchandise. They try to spend as much of it as they can before England switches to the Euro and their bag becomes filled with just so much worthless paper. Together they discover just how hard this can be for two small children in an adult world where money is all-important. Damian, at 7, knows his saints the way other boys know Manchester United. In fact, he's fortunate enough to have his own personal visions. ("Clare of Assisi, 1194 until 1253!") The saints come to him wearing halos ("The Ugandan Martyrs of 1881!") as he seeks his most important saint of all. "Do you ever come across a St. Maureen?" he asks Clare. "She hasn't been there long." Anthony, being the realist, thinks his brother slightly loony. But he seeks St. Maureen too, without completely realizing it. Don't worry about the saints. They're Boyle's hook and have their place. The final sequence might be a stretch for some folks. But Boyle's film in all other respects works perfectly, so why not shoot for the moon? I think it ended the only way it could. Highly recommended for all but the youngest children and prudish adults.

I thought the name Atlantis was a modern media invention, and has nothing to do with it's geographical placement, AND specifically that it wasn't in the Atlantic at all. Or are they just choosing to pretend not to know that part of the myth's development. They're just picking an choosing historical facts to make up their own fictitious narrative. Shame on you. Also, boring.

Austin B (au) wrote: It's often said that "life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think". It's fitting then that 'The Rules of the Game'; a rather melancholic story about unrequited love, loyalty, and a self-obsessed French aristocracy, is staged as a comedy-of-errors. The fluid "dancing of the camera", the use of deep spaces to de-centre and complicate the action, and the rhythmic cuts from scene to scene, combine to create a cinematic experience that is not simply watched; rather absorbed. The film is often cited as one of the greatest in the history of cinema, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. A timeless masterpiece of writing, acting, directing and everything really.
