When I decided to do a film about my mother's death, I was afraid that whoever saw the film would think I was a whiney teenager looking for sympathy. But then I realized that making this ... . You can read more in Google, Youtube, Wiki

Jesse O (fr) wrote: Surprisingly good movie, granted it probably could've been much better. But I wasn't really expecting much from this movie and I was pleasantly surprised with what was, mostly, a character driven affair. Granted, it's not like this is the epitome of character development, but all the subplots did an admirable job of carrying most of the load, and Nick Cheung's performance which, in certain scenes, was really strong. The problem is, these subplots just do the bare minimum that is required. There was this idea that Nick's character is haunted by destroying the life of one of his informants to the point that he fucks a hooker and gets a venereal disease which he then passes on to his wife (I think?). His wife then proceeds to have an accident that causes her to have amnesia. I think the wife subplot was probably the worst part of the movie as it just doesn't seem to mix all that well with the rest of the movie. And there's also the fact that the Ghost character is fighting to save his sister from being pimped out, and this is sort of muddled with everything else the movie wants to get over. Thankfully the action at the end is strong enough that it takes an average movie and makes it, as mentioned, surprisingly good.

Andrew S (it) wrote: Ward and June Cleaver have nothing on suburban couple Ray and Carol Peterson (Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). Together with their perfect son, Ray and Carol are so clean that they squeak. Thus, when new neighbors Dr. Werner Klopek (Henry Gibson), Uncle Reuben (Brother Theodore), and Hans (Courtney Gains) begin evincing bizarre behavior, Ray is slightly put out. Carol thinks that Ray is getting all worked up over nothing. Ray and his fellow suburbanites endure all sorts of slapstick misadventures in the vain hope of getting "the goods" on the newcomers.

Alexander Z (gb) wrote: Wow, this was laughably bad, even for science fiction. The score is awful. The dialogue is awful. It was overly schmaltzy, as if the characters had forgotten about all the people who died. Connie Nielsen's flawless American accent gradually morphed into her native Danish accent by the end of the film. The big reveal at the end featured some the worst CGI I've ever seen (even allowing for the fact that it might have been a hologram, but I doubt it, since they all touched it). There was a complete lack of understanding of even the most basic physics. Probably the biggest offender was when Connie flies off to save Tim Robbins and uses 50% of her fuel, having just enough to get her back. Except for momentum. You know when you throw something and it keeps going? I mean what the hell. Children know this. The movie drags, even during the obligatory something-is-going-wrong scenes. Like a hull breach. You'd think they'd be plugging that in a timely manner, right? Nope. They decide to stand around looking serious and making obvious statements while the pressure drops before moving. There's so little meat to this movie that every scene must be stretched. All it can offer is visuals. And finally, the plot itself. Why in the hell would one alien stick around, waiting for humans? They really needed to complete a puzzle to prove themselves human? Couldn't it just, I don't know, monitor earth like it was apparently doing all this time? Maybe take a damn DNA sample? They created life, so I think that wouldn't be beyond them. Why does it need a booby trap, and a lethal one at that? And why then would it take just the humans who found it? Why not all humans? Why is it a test? Why create life and then ask it to prove itself. The film portrays it as clearly benevolent, yet its actions are borderline retarded. Will there ever be another ship for more humans to go beyond? Seems unlikely. So what, in effect, is the point of all this?
