I remember being one of the first in line to see it when it hit town and giddily talking about it afterward. My temptation is to give it four stars but good sense tells me that 13 year old Randy's opinion differs considerably from 47 year old Randy's opinion. Hence, I'll split the difference between what I remember and what I suspect, at least until I see it again. *NOTE: There is a remake in the works from the same director that brought us Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang.

Haunting vision told through intellectual dialogue and conventional directing, this film is one of Bergman's most representational works - also because here the story and the approach employed to bring it to the big screen is very insular and even a little alienated, which makes it seem all the more intimate and I a result of the Swedish filmmaker's way of working in an almost totally independent way. The acting is excellent.

(fr) wrote: It's more than three hour long but Paul Thomas Anderson's direction expands the story thrillingly by letting several episodes go on at the same time. Not only performance of Tom Cruise who was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actor for Leading Role but performances:*of Julian Moore acting as a unstable wife facing his husband's coming death,*of Melora Walters acting as a drug dependent woman with a trauma,*of Philip Baker Hall acting as a host of a popular quiz coming close to death,*of Philip Seymour Hoffman acting as an honest and kind nurse,*of John C. Reilly acting as an honest and sincere policeman and *of Melinda Dillon acting as a wife of the host of the quiz showare all great. In the script, Melora Walter's character was made first and other characters were added afterwards. It was originally planned for a short film but the script became bigger and bigger and, finally, to be a long film exceeding three hours. Director Paul Thomas Anderson told it's too long and he would cut it when he was asked what he would do if he could improve 'Magnolia' in an interview.Director Paul Thomas Anderson made this movie being inspired by Aimee Mann's songs. He told he wanted cinematize her musical world. Nine Aimee Mann's songs are used in the sound track of the movie. It's impressive that casts trolls 'Wise Up' in their own scenes.
