Chad D (ca) wrote: While it may be a shining homage to the slashers of the past, Hatchet falls victim to the fact that while all the bad aspects of the film are done on purpose, it creates a horror film that, at most times, fails to present anything of quality....albeit, it is better than any slasher film that is being released at the time it was released.

Kevin N (br) wrote: Terry Zwigoff's debut film is a brief hour in length, but it's the kind of absorbing documentary that I could have gone on watching for five or six. Yet perhaps it is the film's short running time that makes it so special, so interesting. Zwigoff gives us an hour of time with the titular Louie Bluie, or more formally Howard Armstrong- one of the most interesting musicians ever committed to celluloid. Here he is nearing the end of his life, yet he shows no signs of stopping his art. Alongside playing fast, hard and soulful blues music, he is also a drawer and poet, and part of the brilliance of Zwigoff's hand is that he intertwines these talents. In one of the best moments of the film, Bluie shows a fellow musician a piece of art that looks as though it probably took years to compile. He calls it the ABC's of Pornography, and it is a book containing pages devoted to prose, photos and drawings that make sex both poetic and obscene. I think that book is probably one of the most personal things Bluie ever did, as it seems to mirror his personality; as the film progresses, we get to see two sides of the man- one is sweet, thoughtful and passionate and the other is crass and dirty. It's a fascinating combination. Besides being about such an interesting subject, the film also contains some mesmerizing musical sequences (thanks to said subject), and these moments, which feature Bluie and pals collaborating on sporadic tunes in their home or on the street, are so raw and unique. It doesn't matter if you like the blues or not; if you're interested in people, this is a must-see movie.

Julio S (fr) wrote: Wow was this movie bad. It tried too hard to be "stage-show"-ish. Most of the musical numbers did not have anything to do with forwarding the story or letting you in on a person's personality, but seemed to just exist for the sake of "we need a number". Yes, the show was supposed to be horrible but do we need to WATCH it be horrible completely instead of just snippets? So instead of a rooting for a girl who has nothing and seeing her become something, we have the same woman, but now is a bitch and wants more, but thinks so lowly of herself she's willing to take a sleazy guy like Caan's character who's so unlikable I don't see how anyone could want to see them work it out. And then Sharif was just plain creepy in this one just standing around trying to get by on looks that are waaay behind him at this point in time. There was just nothing likable about this one, a complete 180 degree turn from Funny Girl.

Tabitha M (ru) wrote: Darkly amusing at points, perhaps tries to hard to appear deep through the use of William Blake quotes and other dialogue. Meanwhile the plot meanders into nothing (or perhaps the plot was metaphorical/existential, but I doubted it as that just seemed too obvious to me).The score is too intrusive and ruins moments that might be potentially thought provoking or moving. It actually becomes quite irritating by the end of the film and leaves you wondering who invited Jimmy Hendrix. The cinematography is actually notable.I would give it 2.5 stars but the onslaught of favorable cameos in the film deserve an extra .5 of a star. Iggy Pop in a Western - who would've thought?Tinkers on the edge of a film that leaves me wanting that last two hours of my life back.
