High Hopes

Slice-of-life look at a sweet working-class couple in London, Shirley and Cyril, his mother, who's aging quickly and becoming forgetful, mum's ghastly upper-middle-class neighbors, and Cyril's pretentious sister and philandering husband. Shirley wants a baby, but Cyril, who reads Marx and wants the world to be perfect, is reluctant. Cyril's mum locks herself out and must ask her snooty neighbors for help. Then Cyril's sister Valerie stages a surprise party for mum's 70th birthday, a disaster from start to finish. Shirley holds things together, and she and Cyril may put aside her Dutch cap after all.

Pierre K (gb) wrote: One of the best film of 2009 goodbye solo is entirely satisfying .It is intelligent well written full of humanity and subtle with a great message about love and friendship; and despite its many unanswered questions it conveys the essential with great talent and harmony. There is not weak point in this story and the storytelling is excellent as well as the mood and the tone .the acting support the story very well ;and Ultimately ,the audience is just taken into this dramatic story of unlikely friendship (which finishes by a heartbreaking and meaningful farewell) easily and deeply. This story about a taxi driver who befriends with a lost soul he met in his cab remains in mind long after the ending credit. It is probably the best compliment Goodbye solo could receive for being such a meaningful realization.Goodbye solo is excellent and Ramin bahrani proves to be one among many by his talent with the camera the editing and story telling. It is totally recommended.

The ones that are the best, like "The Road Warrior" or the similarly post apocalyptic themed "Escape from New York" but a fair amount of thought into the backstory of the universe that their story took place. Although this film was a quickie cash grab by Golan-Globus of Cannon Group, the writer/director here, David Engelbach, actually did have a fair amount of thought behind his world where Amazon-like women are now the ruling class and the tribes of weaker men struggle to survive. There are also more feral groups of men roaming in packs as well. There's also post apocalyptic monsters and assorted post nuke fun to be had here. The story revolved about a leader of a tribe of men seeking to rise up agains the female warrior clan.

Stephen C (br) wrote: John Milius is very much underated as a director and along with The Wind and The Lion this is one of his best films. Tracing the story of three friends over a twelve year period the film is packed with memorable moments including a massive brawl in a house,a trip to Mexico ,a draught dodging exercise and of course the final surfing sequence which is one of the most beautiful things ever shot. The three leads are all great and the film is packed with great acting. The film was a huge flop on release but is now quite rightly regaded as one of the best films of the era and unlike George Lucas's rahter icky American Graffiti has stood the test or time really well. Even if you dont like surfing the films has lots going for it trust me
