Most of them have been hopeless crap. A few have been surprisingly good. This is one of the few that manages to be somewhere in the middle. I mean, if you're looking for a 'good' movie, this isn't it. But, as an homage to the craptaculars of yesteryear, it's got some dubious merit. Plenty of (real) boobs, I didn't spot any tattoos, lots of blood getting spattered (though, not a lot of onscreen gory violence, if any), and some uncomfortable scenes. The soundtrack is obviously composed by someone trying to imitate Rodriguez's work, and failing. Lead actress Cheryl Lyone is what I've come to call ugly-pretty. She somehow manages to be both difficult to look at and extremely attractive at the same time (I would described her as a weird mash-up of Xenia Seeberg and Sondra Locke). And she's far more talented than this film deserves. We'll see if she can rise above. Overall, worth watching if you're in the mood for some wacky crap. Otherwise, skip it.

It's like they did one really good (if unnecessarily graphic) scene, then went... well, guess we need to make a movie around it. The scene itself has good special effects, acting, and although extremely morbid, still top notch. The rest of the film, however, is almost amateur. The acting, camera work, plot... It almost seems like a different film. I'm not saying its a bad try. It's just they needed to put as much effort in the rest of the film as they did in that one scene.

The film drinks you like water, and leaves you completely engulfed in the character of Jack, a writer who is in desperate need of cash who takes a job as a croupier and reveals to himself and the audience how dark a clean and serene casino can really be deep inside, as well as exposing similar truths about human beings.

(us) wrote: This film does not make sense. The blue lagoon ends with Emmeline and Richard being found by her father. Not they were found dead and little Richard was found alive. The boy's name was Paddy (Patrick) not Richard. So really this is nothing like The Blue Lagoon apart from the storyline.

Although his screen time is only roughly ten minutes, he's still able to steal the show. His court room speech was fantastic and is proof on why he is one of the great actors in cinema history. Based on the Leob/Leopold case.

(au) wrote: This movie is probably best remembered for the fact that it was the last movie Johnny Dillinger saw before being shot dead outside the theater (as depicted in the film Public Enemies). Outside of that infamy it isn?t really remembered as well as other gangster films of the era like Little Ceaser, The Public Enemy, and Scarface. Perhaps part of what?s responsible for the film?s relative obscurity is that it has a horrible title (although I suppose it?s a fairly accurate description). Also I think it might have to do with the fact that its star, Clark Gable, isn?t really known as a tough guy the way James Cagney or Paul Munni were. That would seem to suggest that he was miscast, but that isn?t really the case, because his character is pretty different from those guys, and he was also pretty different from John Dillinger. This wasn?t the kind of guy who would be driving around robbing banks himself. He could certainly handle a gun but for the most part he was more the kind of gangster who would control a vast empire, the kind of guy who would rather run a phone scam than personally rob a bank. The film?s relative obscurity is unfortunate because it?s actually a pretty strong work. The film?s story is pretty intriguing, pitting two child friends on opposite sides of the law against each other. Not exactly the most original set up in the world but there?s still drama to it. The film also interestingly ends with a moral dilemma rather than a shootout. Gable proves to be a strong lead, and it interestingly also features Mickey Roony playing Gable as a child. There are some of the typical problems that Hollywood films of the era had to deal with, but for a film made in ?34 it seemed fairly modern. If you?re going to get shot over a movie, this is a pretty good one to do it for.
