Dann M (gb) wrote: Stay Cool is a romantic comedy that has some fun, but doesn't quite know where it's going. The story involves a writer who returns to his hometown to deliver the commencement address at his former high school, and along the way he visits some old friends, including his former high school crush. The film has an interesting cast, which includes Mark Polish, Winona Ryder, Sean Astin and Hilary Duff. And while they all play some pretty fun characters, they don't always seem like they're in the same film. Still, a lot of the film works and it has some interesting things to say about the high school experience and how it affects our lives. Stay Cool has its moments, but has trouble delivering a satisfying story.

This movie though, with so many other biopics out there on actors, sports athletes, and other musicians, this feels like it's just there. Not harmful, just there for the sake of being there.

I guess that is the whole point. I was surprised at how heavy the film got with suicide and whatnot. As entertaining as it was, the film almost felt a little too slight. There was a good deal of pointless filler - musical numbers, etc. - and the actual story itself could have been told in 30 minutes or so. It would have been nice if they focused more on the (obvious and cliched) relationship between the grouchy bookie and the irresistible little girl. The film is still plenty entertaining and it's always so much fun to watch Shirley Temple.
