(jp) wrote: Nobody Knows (????????; 2004)A story of survival of four children whose single mother goes on a trip and never comes back, based on an actual event. At once, heartwarming & heartwrenching. Heartwarming in it's portrayal of the resiliency of the children. Heartwrenching in it's portrayal of the inhumanity of humanity. But the very fact that your hear breaks is confirmation of your own humanity. It reminded me of Boyhood (2014), in that I realized that the children were actually growing up in this film. I believed the children were who they were portraying; I felt their joys & pains. Whether it was the children's acting or the director's, Kore-eda, skillful coaxing, it doesn't matter. Nobody Knows may not for everyone. Kore-eda's style isn't fast & cut-to-the-chase, but deliberate & patient. Also at the end of the film, I still had many questions. It has universal themes and metaphors. Most poignant is the basic aloneness that is faced by people in every society which Nobody Knows. I noticed it was rated PG, but because heartbreaking events in the film, I would rate it at least PG-13. Available at Vernon Videoscape.

(fr) wrote: EVERYTHING CHANGES BUT ALL STAYS THE SAME...seems to be what comes to mind when you see this movie 10 years after it was made. The story here is just one of the gay men world, it's one of the world in general. The grass is always greener on the other side of the street and I want to make my house the most wanted of all and only have it in a neighborhood of pretty houses. However, I don't want the other houses to be "quite" as pretty as mine. Unfortunately, there seems to be one aspect that is very common to gay relationships and that is the preoccupation with cheating and for some guys, wondering if they can "keep" from cheating because no matter who they are with, they always think someone better is out there.Overall, not a gem of a movie, not particularly special, but true enough and a good mirror even after 10 years.

(ca) wrote: Really interesting execution of a flawed concept. A conspiracy thriller at the end of hostility with the Klingons is not a bad idea, but the Klingons were never the main antagonists in the Star Trek universe. Combatting the unknown was always Kirk and Company's primary mission and a Cold War allegory in III and VI only served to highlight how irrelevant the original crew had become. An optimistic ending where the Enterprise crew were made young again like Cocoon would have been preferable, but instead we are left with a military drama heavy on platitudes and light on sci-fi meat.
