William S (de) wrote: The characters in the film are not likable or relative, even though the performances are fine. The message of the film is f*cked up and the filmmakers try to save the story with the ending, but even the ending puts down the overall story and the main characters. The story would have been a lot better, as to the characters, if a few things were changed. For instance, the killer and the father relationship could have been portrayed as a friendship throughout the film until the end, keeping the actions of the killer separate from the father's role in the film. Furthermore, the film could have focused primarily on the father and daughter coping with the loss of the mom. The film tried to do this, but the father and daughter were too removed from one another and the nanny didn't help in that respect. Using the killer as a friend of the father trying to help sell the house could of worked too.

Dan I (ag) wrote: I haven't revisited this film in a very long time, so my perspective might be a little skewed, but what comes through after nostalgia is that it's a corny story that has some decent acting (mostly from the adult actors) but it was still a fun movie which will now only be judged by time. It does seem like the brightness of this film has dimmed, even amongst my peers who grew up with it, so maybe it's fading into pop culture obscurity. Who knows?

Along with Jackie Chan films, this was a major hit in Hong Kong inspiring 2 more sequels. He of course falls in love, with a frequest co-star of many of Chow's films by the name of Cheung Man/ Man Cheung as one of his teachers and it's frequent sidekick Man Tat Ng as his Uncle Tat. Some of the highlights include a group of his fellow police officers and chief helping him to cheating on a test and the socializing of his peers, a student nicknamed Turtle! 3 out of 4

Adrian B (ag) wrote: The other of two films nominated for Best Picture starring William Holden and like "Picnic" along with "Mister Roberts" from 1955, this one was also a bad choice for being a candidate of the award. This time, Holden plays the love interest of a doctor (Jennifer Jones), who is half Asian and half European, while he is visiting Hong Kong. There is a problem, however, and that is Holden married to another woman. When reviewed in 1955, New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther used the term "clichs" to describe the plot of the movie and he ain't kidding. Just a lot chatting and googly eyes and not much else interesting occurs. I also found the portrayal of the Chinese to be fairly poor, with their handling of the English language to be quite insultingly presented. My theory is that Holden, who came off much better films like "Sunset Boulevard" and "Stalag 17" thought he could be good in anything he read. He was possibly right at the time, but he wouldn't be remotely right today. At least the colour and set pieces are nice. So that make three out five of the nominees for Best Picture of 1955 as total duds. At least "Marty," the Best Picture winner, was good. Interestingly, like the very mediocre "A Summer Place" from 1959, this film spawned the title song of huge #1 for a group called The Four Aces, which is not featured in the film.

mike h (ag) wrote: What can I say about this movie, its awesome, I am really sick of watching new movies they bore me and most of the time they really suck. However for some reason I loved this one so much going on so many cool actors. I could be here all day, the list is very long. However I will just focus on one right now Janet Mcteer, she blew me away, I don't think I have ever seen such an amazing performance as an older woman hitwoman ever, she should get an oscar for this performance, I almost wish she had a series around this one character. She is amazing in this role, I wish she had more roles like this one, this movie is another rare gem I just came across by accident. I am seriously jonesing and crushing on Mcteer as a hitwoman kicking ass through a movie, its nice to see an older female actor pull off such an icredible performance, she really stole the show for me, I can't wait to watch her in something else.
