Though I'm not sure why they bothered to make the setting an "Alternate reality 1960's" since it looks nothing like the 1960's (far earlier) and even if it did, the alternative universe thing would explain that enough. Still, weird decision aside, the land Writer/Direct Glen Standring has crafted for his narrative to live in, is far and away the best part of the movie. There's some great style choices too, which readily compliment the setting. Unfortunately, where Perfect Creature falls in its story. Not only are the events that unfold extraordinarily convoluted and yet still somehow underdeveloped, a large chunk of said story is outright uninteresting. That all said, there is enough backing Perfect Creature for me to come out of it with a recommendation, even if by the slimmest of margins.

Also it captures one of Japan's most ancient artist groups with vivid attraction though at times they can simply be prying and nagging. Li Gong adds much spark to this film and lead actress Ziyi Zhang is also great in her role.

There are so many ideas being thrown at the screen in terms of story, perception, memory, camera and sound trickery, that this whole film is considerably less than the sum of its parts.SPOILER ALERT: it was clear to me from fairly early on that a lot (if not all) of what's on screen was existing solely in Gosling's head, so increasingly I felt like I just wanted them to get to the finish. It seemed like a very long 98 minutes, and the end, when it came, was an utter whimper from a film that had been trying so hard to be a BANG from start to finish.

It's a fairly compelling story, but when it leads to a courtroom custody battle between the biological parents and the spiritual parent, the film loses focus on the characters. Still, director Robert Wise is a classy director who knows how to construct a well made thriller.
