Yuk Jiun L (au) wrote: Tsui Hark is back again with his latest fantasy-action-drama-adventure-thriller epic - Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon, which serves as a prequel to Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame released in 2010. The film tells how the young Dee rise to become a respectable detective for the Tang Dynasty, befriends the doctor Shaluo (similar to Sherlock Holmes and Watson) and his rival, Chief Commissioner/Detective Yuchi, unravels and solves an intriguing mystery case which involves a plot to assassinate the royal family and palace officials to overthrow the entire kingdom. In order to fully enjoy the film, it requires some suspension of disbelief from the audience for some of the fantasy or action elements shown in the film such as riding a horse underwater, 'Kraken' beast, parasites that can change a person's looks and behaviour entirely, flying around fighting in the air, etc.Although the wire-action choreography was great and well handled throughout the film, but the action scenes gets a little too much and it feels tedious to watch as the film moves on. It took away the focus of the mystery plot and a lot of potential character development required in the film. However, most of the lead and supporting actors did a fine job in portraying their character roles. The CGI has improved a lot and looked believable and realistic compared with past Chinese big budget films. Overall, it's still a watchable, entertaining Chinese big budget production comparable to Hollywood standards.

Daniel K (ru) wrote: Easily my favourite B-Grade Horror film because it's such an enjoyable film that might be slightly on the corny side but still manages to make it work. Likeable characters and a clever storyline are the best qualities for the film and despite having an unknown cast they are all surprisingly good, especially the lead Tory Kittles. K.D. Aubert is also extremley hot what can I say. The title could have done with some work but it's definitley a title people remember. Plenty of good action and horrific death scenes as you would expect so in every way possible this film doesn't disappoint! Overall a great monster movie that I really enjoyed and would highly reccomend :)

Ricardo O (us) wrote: "It's in the trees! It's coming!""Night of the Demon" is an absolute classic horror film. The film ranks as one of the best, most subtle even, horror films ever made. The theory of actually showing the demon didn't hold right to me but when all is said and done it didn't really hurt the film. But considering this is a Jacques Tourneur film, one would have hoped the demon wouldn't have been shown since the rest of the film is pretty subtle but unfortunately it was against the director's will that the producer decided to take shots of the demon on to the film. The ending however, was pretty great. Those last 15 minutes are superb. Dana Andrews plays the skeptical psychologist Dr. Holden pretty well while Niall MacGuinness shines as Professor Karswell, the leader of a devil worshiping cult; he is downright evil and it's quite ironic what happens in the end. Night of the Demon? has an excellent script written by Charles Bennett, who wrote many films for Alfred Hitchcock (The Man Who Knew Too Much; The 39 Steps; Foreign Correspondent) and some excellent direction by the great Jacques Tourneur. The film also looks excellent shot with its stark b&w cinematography. Highly recommended viewing; a must-see for horror fans. 10/10

Chris L (br) wrote: This is a personal favorite for me. Funny in an uncomfortable way, the laughs hit really close to home for someone raised in a religious household and who attended private school. A lot of stuff Christians do looks ridiculous for those on the outside, this is a good reminder of that. This is also almost enough to push for a Mean Girls remake starring Mandy Moore.
