Its narrative is somewhat off in the middle, during the driver's interlude, but the film still manages to feel deeply intimate and genuine. The dryness in her formal approach and the grainy black and white cinematography showcase the melancholy inherent in every mundane action, building up the journey until it's cathartic conclusion. One of Akerman's first incursions into fiction shows how she had her artistic sensibilities pretty much sorted out already one year before her breakthrough with Jeanne Dielman

Good movie, but didn't really have an ending

hanks again to Bill for scoring me a copy!. If you can't wait for an official release then this version will definitely keep you satisfied until there is. Franco Cleef released an unauthorized DVD-R of the film and so far this is the only version fans are able to get their hands on. This fan goes by the "clever" pseudonym "Franco Cleef" and he undertook a great headache of doing a wonderful widscreen transfer splicing in cut footage from the American release. One fan however got sick of waiting. Sony, where are you on this! It has been proved this film has plenty of fans yet you still sit on it! It bugs the shit out of me that the sequel Run, Man Run got a wonderful DVD release from Blue-Underground yet The Big Gundown is still unavailable. The worst thing about The Big Gundown is that it isn't available on an officially released DVD. Cuchillo's reaction is hilarious! The Big Gundown was such a hit that Sergio Sollima returned to direct a sequel entitled Run, Man, Run which focuses on our Cuchillo character. Is there a bad Ennio Morricone score? I don't think so! Solimna also garnishes the film with some well placed humor, my favorite being a scene where Cuchillo gets thrown into the same prison cell as Cleef. His stylish directing is made even more beautiful with Ennio Morricone's wonderful score. Sergio Sollima's direction is also solid and it's a damn shame he didn't direct more films as his three spaghetti westerns and two poliziotteschi films are classic. You couldn't ask for a better cast. Cleef is tough as ever in his bounty hunter role and to be honest I would be scared shitless to have him tracking my ass down! Milian is wonderful in is smartass Mexican half-breed role and he was so good that he ended up making a career out of such characters playing similar roles in such classics as Tepepa, Companeros, and Django Kill. The question is did Cuchillo really do the deed? The result ends in one of the best duels ever in spaghetti western history, especially since its between a knife and a gun!Our two leads are perfectly cast and it's wonderful to see these two great actors on screen together for the one and only time in their careers. Cuchillo proves to be smart, devious bastard that uses his smart mouth and wits to get out of all of Cleef's traps. A wealthy friend and colleague has just offered Cleef the opportunity of a lifetime if he will only track down and kill a Mexican-half breed named Cuchillo (Tomas Milian) who has supposedly raped and killed a young girl. The film as an civil war vet (Lee Van Cleef - pre "Good, Bad and the Ugly") who has been lowered to life of bounty hunting, a job he happens to be extremely good at. Yes that is a bold statement as the genre is littered with classics but I find this film to be just superbly made and with a lot of heart and it contains all the ingredients of a great spaghetti. After Sergio Leone's grand epics, one film ranks higher than the rest and for my money The Big Gundown is the single best non-Leone spaghetti western

I would definitely recommend Play it Again, Sam for people interested in exploring Woody Allen's films as one of the first ones to check out. And although many people would have opposing opinions, I enjoyed Play it Again, Sam moreso than I enjoyed his multi Academy Award winning film Annie Hall, which also won Best Picture and shared a somewhat similar premise with similar themes and the same lead actors. For a film not directed by Woody Allen himself is has lost none of the quirks of his usual work which Herbert Ross must be held with significant praise for, but its really Woody Allen's writing talent for an impeccably original story and clever script that must be held for the most credibility of Play it Again, Sam as well as his acting skills. Play it Again, Sam was really entertaining, moreso than I predicted. Tony Roberts was also good, and Jerry Lacy was truly exceptional as Humphrey Bogart which is a challenge he successfully pulls off excellently to the comedic effect and benefit of the story in Play It Again, Sam. The chemistry they share is also excellent and the audience can truly sense a connection between them which makes Play It Again, Sam all the more sweeter and successful. Woody Allen captures the character Allan's neuroticism very well and works his line delivery excellently, and Diane Keaton does the same although to a lesser extent than Woody Allen so that she can maintain a higher level of sophistication as her characters in Woody Allen films usually do. Really, Play It Again, Sam is just a really sweet movie which works strongly as a standalone romantic comedy and excellent homage to Casablanca from start to finish with such unarguable entertainment to it. Its a phenomenally hilariously well plotted film with a very original premise and great amount of laughs, as well as being stylish thanks to Herbert Ross's direction and the fine cinematography. The plot is very original because it follows the guardian angel of a neurotic nerd who is, in actual fact, Humphrey Bogart. Its really very clever and very funny in that sense, and shows off what Woody Allen is good for in some of his earliest work. Play It Again, Sam connects its lead two characters in the most socially awkward and neurotic way, and what more could you expect from a Woody Allen film? He achieves this through his clever scriptwriting abilities which makes him articulate the most complicated and unexpected ideas into comedic territory, including jokes about female sexuality and suicide. Real characters are what Woody Allen deals with best, so Play It Again, Sam sets itself off pretty good. Play It Again, Sam opens with a script that begins cliche in its writing, but successful in the way that it deals with the thoughts and feelings of the character Allan who seems very real

a brilliant cast and some really funny moments, the way the whole thing ends up makes it better as a nice "they got away with the loot" story would have sucked to me. i liked this films i liked the story and all the little sayings

Dench is scarier than any kind of monster you will ever find in a horror film, and is just brilliant. A smartly written screenplay, especially with Dench's witty narration, and a pair of excellent actresses that give some of their best performances make this quiet, little film into one fantastic movie
