I Hired a Contract Killer

I Hired a Contract Killer

After fifteen years' service, Henri Boulanger is made redundant from his job. Shocked, he attempts suicide, but can't go through with it, so he hires a contract killer in a seedy bar to murder him at some unspecified time in the future. But almost immediately he meets and falls in love with Margaret, a flower-seller, which makes Henri realise that his life has some meaning after all. But when he goes back to the bar to cancel the contract, he finds it has been demolished - and there's no way he can get in touch with the killer...

Matt G (nl) wrote: This, along with The Sweet Hereafter, pretty much makes Atom Egoyan the master of irony. The nonlinear structure once again allows him to avoid melodrama. Great performances. And the cinematography is really blue. I love that. The only thing that stops this from being really really great, to me, is the side plot with the guy who smuggles in macaw eggs. Found it really unnecessary. But still, really good film.

Nick T (us) wrote: Not sure how this movie is getting well-reviewed on RT and blasted on every other movie review site. This film is propaganda at work - period. Dig into this movie's connections and you will find Scientology at work here. It's nice to find a few cherry-picked seconds of a few clips over the span of 30 years, but to completely question the need for medication is outright absurd. I'd be remiss if I didn't say that I feel this documentary does more harm than good. I wouldn't really call it a documentary since it focuses on the recycled hyperbole of "anti-(fill in the blank) industry" mentality, as if the topic could be divided into black vs. white. Why does this movie need eerie music and "doomsday" effects running in the background if it is scientific? Oh, cause it isn't scientific.

Patrick L (it) wrote: The movie is intended to be viewed by cantonese speaking people. The translation is very poor thus making the jokes confusing and misleading for the non-cantonese speakers and it's not worth the time to watch this movie without the comedy. Highly recommend for cantonese speakers, the movie is very funny, one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

Robert H (ag) wrote: You know the term so bad it's good... Hell up in Harlem is exactly that. Filled with random scenes, un defined story and characters and confusing storytelling, Hell up in Harlem should be a terrible film that nobody likes. Take the fact that it's so over the top, non-sensical and full of violence and Hell up in Harlem becomes super fun and enjoyable. This is truly a film that makes up for what it lacks in style and skill with everything we love in an action movie... ACTION! No beating around the bush (unless the cat deserved it), Hell up in Harlem gets right to the fight scenes and only lets up for some pimp action, small sections of dialogue and crazy attempts at moving the plot along. I highly recommend you watch this film if you are at all into Blaxploitation films and lean more towards their fun factor rather than their social commentary or historical impact.

Sarah H (es) wrote: Here's the thing: this is a movie that doesn't take any prisoners, perhaps more out of navet than by design. It expects you to know the various characters and the approximate beats of the Barnabas story; the fun is in seeing it all played out on a drive-in movie screen in vibrant, schlocky color. That aim doesn't really translate for the home media market, where leaps in time and logic are all too easy to scrutinize. It's fun to see as a stepping stone between the TV series and the big-budget Tim Burton film, but it's a curio at best, and at worst, a cheap, bad movie.
