Mike S (de) wrote: Basically Die Hard on a plane, with the extra element of the lone hero also being the president. The film does feel a little dated due to being made in a pre 9/11 era, and some overly patriotic sentiment at times gets a bit much, especially towards the end. However, its entertaining and keeps moving at a brisk pace.Gary Oldman, as always, is great as the villain and eats up the scenery in a very theatrical performance. Harrison Ford works well as the President, however, his character doesn't feel very presidential, but maybe I'm just cynical. I couldn't help at times but feel that sometimes it goes too far in the protection of the president. I know he's the leader of the most powerful country in the world, but it starts to get ridiculous after a while. How many people have to die to protect him?
Don S (ca) wrote: Before you think the worst, this is not a movie about the sex book. It is a period piece set in 16th century India. A romantic drama that pretty much fails on the romantic part, but has believable costuming and pretty cinematography. There is more nudity than I feel was called for, but apparently even more scenes were left on the cutting room floor. The story is simple and has been filmed many times over by nearly every country. The acting is on the poorer side, however Indira Varma impressed me again (I saw her in Mad Dogs as well.) She needs to be showcased in better movies.
Kevin C (it) wrote: I thought it started out really poorly, but it got better as the movie went on. Overall it was decent -- maybe worth a rent -- but nothing really stood out to me. I likely won't remember it a couple months down the road.

Tibor B (mx) wrote: Very early Michael Powell film - a moving and interesting look at residents of a remote Scottish island coming to terms that their way of life, in the words of Dads Army John Laurie is "doooooomed!" The locations are stunning of course and there are some flashes of the inventive visual style that Powell would develop further, but there is some embarrassingly clunky dialogue and acting which takes away from the film.
