Daisy M (ca) wrote: This is a very well written movie based on reality. Actor's performances are great. I like the movie because is a drama of an immigrant whom driven by the bad economic situation of her country, was forced to leave the homeland and work as a prostitute in Madrid Spain. She was promised for a visa to stay legally in the country, but they just used her. She met Caye who is just a prostitute too They understand each other and they create a true friendship until Zulema has to leave the country because her HIV results came back positive. A very human story that is worth to see it.

Julie M (de) wrote: This was THE movie to watch back in 1992 at church sleepovers! The best part of the movie is when Scott's love interest gets a makeover before the dance.

Caesar B (jp) wrote: Was this made by Slitherin studios? Because it's basically an episode of deadliest warrior, title: Vikings vs. Indians. It's really boring and way too fucking dark. Literally too dark, can't see shit. I like Karl Urban as an actor, but boy, does this movie blow.

Art S (it) wrote: I have owned this on VHS for many years but watching it again now, it seems rather long and drawn out. The story (from James Hilton) is a good one. The British foreign secretary (Ronald Colman), sick of war and conflict, is lost in the Himalayas when his plane is hijacked and goes down. There he finds (or is found by) the Lamas of Shangri-La who live in a peaceful idyllic community protected on all sides by mountains. Somehow there is no stress, no sickness, no strife - humans have everything they need. Colman and some notable character actors (Thomas Mitchell, Edward Everett Horton) grow to realize that Shangri-La is better than the world outside. But yet some of the plane crash survivors and even some residents of the valley wish to leave. Colman helps them but then finds that he can't face ordinary human society and (we learn in a third person rendering) he does everything he can to make the incredibly arduous journey back to the peaceable theocracy. Director Frank Capra avoids the big issues and just lets the characters spout some platitudes. Maybe the film's heart is in the right place but last night it seemed just too fantastic.

James H (mx) wrote: 85/100. A rather unusual film, director Josef von Sternberg's stylish and offbeat direction certainly makes this an interesting movie. What a production, the art direction is amazing, as are the costumes. You can see von Sternberg's eye for the visual throughout the film, particularly in the dramatic cinematography and use of shadows and light. The cast is great. Marlene Deitrich is hauntingly beautiful, Louise Dresser is impressive as Empress Petrovna and Sam Jaffe does well as the half-wit, Grand Duke Peter. The score is powerful, and also occasionally intrusive. Although released in 1934, it has silent film elements in it, perhaps von Sternberg was not quite comfortable with talking pictures. Overall, it's quite a remarkable film.
