(it) wrote: The only thing the silly, dark comedy has and relies on is the star to make this film successful by bringing in laughs. I'd observed, and to report that he'd only done little, even when the film is under his kind of language while he's trying out what Kevin James done in another mall. "Paul Blart" brought more laughs because it's funnier and more friendly, while this R-rated Rogen film is more inappropriate and less funny. (C+)(Full review coming soon)

(jp) wrote: This is really anything but a typical Will-Ferrell-no-brainer here. This is a fantastic mix of comedy and drama, rarely seen before.STF has an inventive, unpredictable and great plot + screenplay, it is a magical tale of love and human imperfection and Ferrell and Maggie Gee just act so dropdead-gorgeous here - the scene where...> I brought you flours! < - is so sweet, I had to watch it over and over again. And MG is acting just wonderfully, again she wins my heart, like in a couple of films before. But there are several more scenes of such pure poetic grace. (WF meets Emma Thompson, returning the draft of the book to her!!!) - so great...made me cry almost.Actually WF here is a lilttle like with Jim Carrey in "Eternal sunshine of TSM" - no horribly cheap and cheesy over-acting, but sincere and credible portraying of a human character, that the spectator can actually feel sympathy for and will most probably knock on wood for.At least I did, because I so wanted this underdog-/loser character of WF to prevail!!!I simply love anything about STF - this is so much better than the average comedy-stuff out there.I also love "Being john malkovich" by Kaufman+Jonze and "Eternal sunshine of TSM" by Kaufman+Gondry. These 3 films have a lot of things in common. A totally fresh and unpredictable plot, is just one of those things....!my rating of the film = 90%###############################################################90%

(ag) wrote: Goldie Hawn's adorableness and Steve Martin's likeability keep the movie watchable, but the movie utterly fails as a comedy, as someone forgot to put comedy in this movie.

(mx) wrote: This sex comedy farce has dated badly but still boasts some laughs thanks to strong central performances from its three leads and the ridiculous situation it sets up.It is about a middle aged dentist who has pretended to be married in order to avoid making a commitment to his young girlfriend but, when faced with losing her, he decides to get married to the girl after all. Unfortunately he has to deal with his new fiance's pangs of guilt as she begins to worry about the harm she is doing to his wife and children, and so he has to get his nurse assistant (who is in love with him herself) to pretend to be his wife so he can show her that all will be well. Of course, the situation will become more and more complicated as it all plays out.Matthau was well suited to this sort of ridiculous farce as his wonderfully expressive face reflexes in pain and astonishment at every twist and kink that gets thrown up in the way of his plan. Goldie Hawn works well alongside him as his young love interest, showing strong comic timing and convincing as a character who is keen to keep a clean conscience through everything. It is Ingrid Bergman though whose character Stephanie provides the heart that kept me engaged throughout the silliness. Having never seen Bergman act in a comedy before I was surprised at just how funny she can be, here cast as a sort of 'straight man' who is drawn into things very much against her will.As for the material the three are working with, it has not aged well. What was once an edgy sexual comedy now seems remarkably tame and the elements of youth culture (the record shop and nightclub) only make the action seem more dated.Still, while lines and settings have become flatter and less salacious with age, the film retains its easy charm thanks to its three leads. Its more fun than funny, but diverting enough to be worth adding to your Netflix queue.

(es) wrote: This is an interesting film, mixing as it does several genres...unfortunately, it excels at none of them. It's not exciting or interesting enough to act as a thriller or pseudo-documentary and the tension just never builds to a sufficient level. We don't know enough about the characters to really care what happens to them, even if this is about the human race as a whole. Worthy, but not great entertainment.
