(us) wrote: For a guy who has never watched a full episode of Sex and the City, the second film based on one of HBO's most famous comedy series is one of the most putrid and excruciating pieces of cinematic pigswill ever made. In a time of a continuing economic collapse, inequality and racial controversies, Sex and the City 2 is the completely wrong movie at the wrong time. Its water-thin narrative about four female travesties traveling to Abu Dhabi to basically do nothing but eat exotic food and spend money on worthless trash celebrates consumerism while creating abhorrent depictions of motherhood, marriages and womanhood in general. These women shriek, complain, consume, shriek, complain, shriek, complain some more, consume and consume and complain... WHILE EVERYTHING IS FINE. They have mountains of money, fancy clothes, extravagant apartments full of trendy furniture, giant televisions, irritating children, and loving husbands, but who must be a little empty-headed since one of them (who has to be an arms dealer or at least a crooked fundraiser for important politicians) buys a TV the size of a football field for an anniversary gift, while the wife had hoped some more jewelry. Oh, but she learns not to care about that little vexation, since in the magical consumption land of Abu Dhabi she has a spiritual awakening as she learns that everyone really can't afford that jewelry, because they just don't make enough money. This is two and a half hours of absolute torture. The only glimpse of light is the hope that this is meant to be just a really bad satire. But even if so, Sex and the City 2 is still cinematic consumption porn completely disconnected from real societal issuses, such as gender roles, motherhood and inequality, that it hopes to touch upon even slightly. Instead it wants its audience to sympathize with and relate to the most contemptible bunch of hysterical and materialistic imbeciles, and realize that money actually doesn't define everything, as long as you have an extravagant apartment, a TV the size of a football field, fancy clothes, jewelry, and a loving, if sometimes lazy, husband. This is a film that will make you both mentally and physically sick. It is a film to be burned at stake and buried deep into the ground, so its evil forces can never rise again.
(ca) wrote: Certainly an interesting and fun watch but it left me feeling slightly empty- it's like a medium pizza that's enjoyable throughout but when it's finished you'd wished it had been a large instead but you are still hungry. What's missing here is a basis to this film that isn't simply an attempt to be cute, interesting or as everyone else on here seems to call it- whimsical. For a short everything about Micmacs is spot-on and it would certainly be memorable but for a feature length piece I expect a bit more than someone trying to make me smile throughout by having an air of humour and few actual jokes. It's like going to a comedy show where a comedian seems like a really interesting and good person and the crowd responds to that but the jokes are average and far from special. Too much style and not enough bite. It's wrong of me to view this as strictly a comedy, it should be more but the reality is that nothing more is given here- very little is truly memorable and that's a waste of a good premise in my view. Still a good watch but far from what it should have been.

But for the less precious types with decent attention spans, it is extremely powerful. It's about as closest to a documentary as scripted films come. Fascinating history lesson (especially in its similarity to ever-contemporary events), there are no "characters" as we understand them in comtemporary film - no manufactured drama. Simply real people, some dull, some charismatic, living thrown desperate time. There are some nail-bitingly suspenseful sequences. There is little judgement directed at individuals on either side of the conflict, merely a direct examination of what desperation forces people to do...and how futile that can be. The timelessness of this piece isnt just in the quality of the production, but in the sense that it applies to so many situations today. Sad, intense, fascinating, vital, timeless...and utterly unforgettable.
