Robert B (ru) wrote: Abandoned Mine (Jeff Chamberlain, 2013)Abandoned Mine started off with a bang-there are some nifty filmmaking techniques that make it seem like you're going to get something much more than you are from this low-budget horrorfest. For some reason, however, Chamberlain abandons the pretense to the avant-garde once things get rolling, and we end up with a straightforward haunted-mine tale, mediocre but watchable.Plot: Brad (Pearl Harbor's Reiley McClendon) is a post-high-school layabout in a small rural town, bored out of his skull. His ex-girlfriend Laurie (Reservations' Saige Thompson) is back in town, so he cooks up an idea-the two of them, Brad's current girlfriend Sharon (Spy Kids' Alexa PenaVega), Laurie's schoolmate Ethan (High School Musical 2's Charan Prabhakar), and Brad's best friend Jim (Radio Flyer's Adam Hendershott), will spend the night near the mouth of the legendary Jarvis Mine, supposedly haunted by the family of the Jarvis that the mine is named for. A thunderstorm drives them inside, and weird things start happening...Unfortunately, none of those weird things are terribly unpredictable; you should be on the right track relatively soon, and from there, aside from some appealing ambiguity as to what's really going on with one of the characters, it unfolds in paint-by-numbers fashion. This has a surprisingly high-powered cast for such a shoestring affair, and despite being stereotypes, the characters are at least affable (I waffled the whole movie on whether Ethan was offensive or the best character in the entire movie). I've seen far worse movies this year, but I've seen far better as well. **

Rental.

Walter M (us) wrote: In "Maqbool," things are looking up for Miyan Maqbool(Irrfan Khan), a henchman of Abbaji(Pankaj Kapur), a crime lord in Mumbai, after he helps out in an attack against a rival gang in retaliation for the murder of Abbaji's brother. For his services, Maqbool is promoted to overseeing the gang's interests in Bollywood. The corrupt Inspector Pandit(Om Puri) predicts that this is only the beginning of his rise and his partner Purohit(Naseeruddin Shah) confirms that he is never wrong. Anyway, Maqbool is dissatisfied at his latest assignment which matches the unhappiness of Abbaji's mistress Nimmi(Tabu) who is starting to come on to him, saying how tired she is of Abbaji... "Maqbool" is a satisfactory take on Shakespeare's Macbeth that is stolen by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah playing a combination comic relief/Greek chorus. The movie is rather slowly paced for its first half(And Maqbool should not be freaking out until the deed is done.), taking too much time to set up the events of the second half. In other words, what comes around, goes around. Abbaji knows this but does Maqbool? Despite my lacking much knowledge of Indian traditions, I would say that this version's moral is centered around loyalty and that there are certain lines that should never be crossed. Brandon S (ag) wrote: This movie feels like a student film project, but its not. Perhaps the audacious name is due to the inclusion of a number of disparate horror elements in the film. Mostly the film relies on atmospheric horror, but it also includes psychological, zombie, torture, and vampiric elements. This is one of those movies in which time does not flow in a straight line. In that way its similar to Mulholland Drive, but that film is one million times better than Horror. Mulholland Drive came out a year earlier, so I wonder if it was an influence.Horror Took 18 days to film. Its a low budget movie. Its confusing and weird. I dont think its good, but I didnt hate it either. The writer/director commentary is helpful, but still the viewer is left to decide if its all a dream, a drug hallucination, an afterlife experience, or what. Its one of those movies with a lot of crosses in the background. One of the main characters is a demonic preacher and faith healer, who is apparently the father of the heroin though they look to be the same age. His father (another main character) is a mesmerizer. The heroin's mother is perhaps my favorite character; she seems to be tripping all the time and is blissfully evil. If you like weird and creepy movies, and you dont mind low budget, then you might want to "smoke'em if you've got'em" and check out this movie.

Wayne L (fr) wrote: A low budget staging of this musical works well because of the charm and overall goofiness of the direction. Performances are great. Donny Osmond is surprisingly effective and Maria Friedman is terrific as always. The songs are pretty hummable throughout.

Alex r (ag) wrote: This is a semi fictional made for tv movie based on the Canadian Avro Arrow. The world's first supersonic aircraft. I have read the story of the Arrow many times. During the height of the Cold War, Canada seeks to replace it's CF-100 interceptors to defend their Arctic airspace. The aircraft that they need is something so advanced that every aircraft company have turned down the contract. Minister of everything C.D Howe convinces the heads of the Canadian air force to consider Avro Aircraft. At first they say its impossible, but principle engineer Jim Chamberland comes up with a delta wing design for the aircraft. The Arrow is a well made docu-drama, and it does bring to light a lot of facts from the story. But obviously it was changed slightly to make the film more dramatic. The cast is a pretty good one, but considering the talent involved, the cast could have been better with a better script. The Avro Arrow was the most advanced aircraft in the world it was designed to intercept Russian bombers and destroy them. In the film, we get a good look at every step of the Arrow program from the optimistic beginnings to the poignant. The Arrow is a fine made for TV movie that dramatizes these events. The Arrow was the finest aircraft every made, when we Canadians designed and built it, we were 20 years ahead everyone else. Unfortunately for The Arrow, the political issues where a big speed bump for the project, and the plane never entered service. We get a glimpse of Diefenbaker's attempt at cancelling the project. Crawford Gordon (the head of Avro Canada) attempts at proving the Diefenbaker government wrong. Unfortunately The Arrow program was cancelled on February 20th, 1959. All the planes were scrapped and the employees were laid off. The ending of the film is absolute fiction as it never happened. The ending suggests that one Arrow survived scrapping and still exists. Even though this is part fiction and part fact, this made for tv film should spark interest in the real story of the Avro Arrow. Of course this flawed, but still very interesting to watch and seeing this sad but incredible story come to life on film.

Jordan E (kr) wrote: Last Knights has an appealing look and feel. I can't say that I didn't enjoy the movie because I did. No the problem I have with the Last Knights is the empty shell of a much more interesting back story. Also the extremely close nod 47-Ronin. The movie had great elements, the environment, the armor and feel, how the political systems work and the sorta of "Pangea" feel to the combined cultures. Though there are plot points that to me make little to no sense and flat out didn't work. The completely un-threatening casting of the Emperor that had more of a High School theater student feel to him. This movie has an appealing shell, but is hollow of entertainment. It just was lacking in excitement, it made a whole new fantasy world feel smaller than a small town. There is also a continuity error. Morgan freeman explains that his father fought in some of the great wars, but the Emperor mentions that his family line has kept peace for multiple generations. Two of my (2 1/2 star) is primarily from Morgan Freeman's appearance.
