Vilified by some and venerated by others as the FBI informant largely responsible for the imprisonment of two youths following the 2008 Republican National Convention, Darby was once a charismatic activist mythologized by the American Left for his daredevil aid work in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Informant meticulously constructs a portrait of his life—before and after the death threats—through intimate interviews with Darby and tense reenactments starring the man himself.

John Cusack plays the same character he's ever played post-Grosse Point Blank, and Tom Jane plays a pussy who used to drive race cars. There's some good back and forth between Tom and John which is fortunate since not a single additional character gets fleshed out in any real way. I actually felt more for the kid who shoots his own face off (funny as shit) than the lady cop chasing them and all the other characters are generic faces that blend together.

It has some plot holes, but it is still one of Marvels most entertaining movies, and one where you actually care about both the heroes and (omg) the villain. The characters are complex, and truly got some development (unlike more recent MCU movies).

If you've been to Scotland, especially Edinburgh, you will know that the film is affectionately remembered by most who saw it on its release. It conveys the existential alienation felt by many of the underemployed youth of the time but does so gently, avoiding the gritty, degraded, and salacious realities found in Trainspotting and other more realistic productions. Restless Natives takes some comedic shots at Margaret Thatcher and Thatcherism and at the US intelligence agencies (via Ned Beatty's workmanlike turn as a CIA agent beleagured in his personal life). It also gently satirizes the Scottish tourism industry and its marketing of the scenic Highlands. The film may be criticized by some for its debt to the sensibility of Bill Forsyth, but its homage to the great pioneer is straightforward, unabashed, and winning. It is a charming, enchanting entertainment that will leave all but the most jaded feeling good. It will also leave memories of some downright brilliant comedic situations.

So for this being another great film by Van Damme, I give "Hard Target" a B.
