Johnny T (br) wrote: A Monster Calls deftly balances dark themes and fantastical elements to deliver an engrossing and uncommonly moving entry in the crowded coming-of-age genre. Meticulously and sensitively made, though its best moments may be the lovely but intense watercolor-toned interstitial animated sequences that illustrate the monster's thorny spiritual allegories, cartoons for grownups rather than for little ones. A lovely film and another impressive calling card for Bayona, who can mix genres in an innovative way like his former producer, Guillermo del Toro. He's created a deeply emotional film about loss that will probably have you crying by film's end. Bayona understands the forces that bind families together and the ones that tear individuals apart. His real domain is childhood itself, and few storytellers summon its fears and fury so faithfully. Bayona understands the forces that bind families together and the ones that tear individuals apart. His real domain is childhood itself, and few storytellers summon its fears and fury so faithfully. This is a tough movie that takes on adult issues and doesn't shy away from the grim realities of its subject matter. But that's what makes this grim children's story work. It's a work of lovely darkness. It has universal appeal, and something important and meaningful to say.VERDICT: "High-Quality Stuff" - [Positive Reaction] This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent. (Films that are rated 3.5 or 4 stars)

Tsukasa A (nl) wrote: I thought it was a romantic comedy but it is not. It's a story of people who are suffering from addiction and trying to get over it by sharing their problems with their friends and helping each other. It's heartening to know that there are people who are taking one day at a time like this.

The overall vibe is back to that of the original trilogy of films, due in no small part to the return of Bryan Singer as director.Rental!

Hannah D (ru) wrote: I don't think that Will Ferrell speaking Spanish is inherently funny, which I couldn't tell if the film thought that it would be. But overall I thought it was a passably silly spoof and seemed similar to the Spoils of Babylon in terms of quirky stuff. I love anything with Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. And call me crazy but I do think Will Ferrell is a comedian with pathos. So I thought is was decent but I was also on pain meds watching this so who knows.

Geoff H (mx) wrote: I was expecting a low budget, poorly made film... but what i got was a well made, glossier than expected siege movie. The story could fit on the back of a postage stamp, and it's a real shame about that. But the lavish visuals, the gory fx, the sumptuous music, kinda make up for it. Not totally mind, but enough to make this film enjoyable to watch.

Paul Z (kr) wrote: Marrying Altman and Nichols in style, Nicholson himself is a remarkably memorable actor, and he leads his actors into truly rarefied realism and intensity revolving around a campus as model of the era's dueling psychological states, paranoia and neurotic competitiveness. Even the love interest seeks to lay claim to a personality of her own.

Kirk E (us) wrote: Although Brando is billed as the star, the film really belongs to Anthony Quinn.
