Thank god Ric Meyers previews this stuff at SDCC. Kind of hilarious in a gory way

As a movie - not that hot, but Abbie Hoffman is/was hilarious and important - Steal this movie, America, and wake the fuck up

ottom line: Duh, Comrade. Still, the training and fight scenes make for as many gripping as parody-worthy moments. Burt Young, long an unlikable but indelible supporting character, hits cartoonish heights here, as does Lundgren as the Italian Stallion's formidable and memorable foe, Ivan "I must break you" Drago. By now, Stallone and Shire plow through the formulaic goings-on on cruise control, but their earnest chemistry still remains. In this PG-rated sports drama, Rocky (Stallone) comes to the heart of Russia for 15 pile-driving boxing rounds of revenge after a highly intimidating 6-foot-5, 261-pound Soviet athlete (Dolph Lundgren) kills Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in an exhibition match. Taking the Cold War to the canvas, Stallone's third Rocky sequel trades blows with ridiculousness, but nonetheless draws you into the action by repeating a successful formula and not forsaking its underdog roots. If the last chapter proved over-the-top and flashy, then this flag-waving exhibition epitomizes the words overblown and gaudy. Indeed, of all of the Rocky films, Rocky IV ages the worst. Taking the franchise down Rocky roads that it would not return from for 20 years, the dated antics of chapter III set the series in a carnival atmosphere that's thankfully not entirely without its blunt-force charm

You can see the gaglines coming a mile away there. It's actually quite interesting to see how Allen's timing is off in quite a few set-ups, for instance the bedroom scene with the sportscommentator is only funny for the first few seconds, and then becomes tedious. It can't actually be called satire as it misses most points about South America or Cuba. The break up scene about 15 minutes in is a classic and the scene with his surgeon parents in the operating theatre is pretty funny too, but the rest now looks pretty drab. Looking very dated now, the film has a few original moments

As long as you do not enter this movie looking for a realistic or suspenseful thriller, it should entertain. It would be nice to see a more serious and faithful adaptation of the book in the future. I do not understand why the jungle romp replaces the excitement and violence of the Crichton story. It is not a highly crafted movie, but it knows what it is. The makeup and costume team did a decent job of making an actor seem apelike enough without becoming a distraction. Simple sign language would be better than the special computer gloves that convert and translate in robot voice for everyone to understand. Making a gorilla interact in human ways and using sign language is not easy. The settings of the African jungle and ancient ruined city of Zinge look great. Tim Curry and Joe Don Baker in particular, have just the right amount of crazy cartoon character in them. It helps that the director and cast do not approach it too seriously. This movie has its own campy charm and when taken for what it is can be good fun. Michael Crichton is probably not happy that his thriller book converted into an intentionally humorous playful action movie
