Into Great Silence
Into Great Silence (German: Die Große Stille) is a documentary film directed by Philip Gröning that was first released in 2005. It is an intimate portrayal of the everyday lives of Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse, high in the French Alps (Chartreuse Mountains). The idea for the film was proposed to the monks in 1984, but the Carthusians said they wanted time to think about it. The Carthusians finally contacted Gröning 16 years later to say they were now willing to permit Gröning to shoot the movie, if he was still interested.

Rune is a skinny, young man that is at a severe disadvantage among all the violent offenders. He is alone, and tries to fine his place in this hierarchy between the prisoners. The film uses a lot of hand held to create this gritty, naturalistic look. Its really nothing groundbreaking visually but it works for the storytelling. Its really a film more about harsh uncompromising atmosphere of prison where loyalty is almost non-existent and brutal animals are everywhere. An easy comparison to this film would be Un Prophete, which is superio film R is more streamlined but lacks the artistic merits and dramatic tension which Un Prophete was able to achieve. R still has qualities of merit on its own; its just nothing incredibly groundbreaking.

This is a classic for a reason and it is quite possibly the quientessential dog film.
