Kim P (it) wrote: Full of cliches and cheese...ya gotta love these sorta films, even if it's just for a giggle ;D

Kathy D (gb) wrote: I can't say it was fun but I enjoyed this. It was hilarious, in a low key sort of way, Some unexpectedly beautiful moments amongst the visual drek. I suspect I would have "gotten" more of the references if I had known more about the original Louise Michel.

Zane T (mx) wrote: Albert Brooks can be forgiven for his first movie as a director, because he had made better movies such as Lost in America and Defending Your Life, so this is really just finding your groove of a movie. Brooks plays himself as an aspiring filmmaker who has a crew fim the lives of a Phoenix family with more problems than they want the world knowing. Inspired by PBS' An American Family about the Louds family, this movie seems to be more about Brooks than about the family he is supposed to be filming and that is it's problem. Harry Shearer, who co-wrote this movie and has a small role as one of the camera men, would know the secret of This is Spinal Tap was that make it look like a documentary not a movie about a fake documentary. As for the family, Charles Grodin does his thing that he does in every movie and Brooks does his thing. The best part is Frances Lee McCain as the missus of the family who is able to pull off some laughs as she becomes immediately upset by the cameras and tries to go after Brooks. McCain is most memorable for her mother roles in Gremlins and Footloose, but here she is able to cut loose and let go. J.A. Preston has another good small role as a psychologist who debates the whole filming process and has a nice funny scene where he makes Brooks feel uncomfortable when he keeps going on and on about how Preston is black. But the movie falls short because it doesn't have the oomph Brooks other movies had. It would have been better if we didn't see the camera men running around all the time with these silly camera helmets on that look like something out of Battlestar Gallactica.
