Jillian L (au) wrote: ...I don't know about this one. To be honest, what turned me off about this one was that I did not like the main character. I didn't know what his motivations were for his actions, especially when he says he has cancer. I had no idea why he did that. It kind of came out of nowhere. Dan Byrd was fine, especially when he finally confronts his problems, I just didn't like the way the character was written. Emily VanCamp was cute and charming, but there wasn't really much more to go on. Richard Jenkins pretty much saves this one. I thought his performance was heartbreaking and honest. What really did this one for me was it's attempt to be darkly funny. It was the style of humor that was spot on in 50/50, but here was just plain dark and uncomfortable. Personally, I think this is one to skip.

Mark A (jp) wrote: Jessica Chastain, in her breakout feature film debut, as a young woman searching for her place in the world, is spectacular, as her character ages from 15 to 25. The story reminded me somewhat of the underground, soft-porn 1964 novel, Candy, by Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg, which in turn was a parody of Voltaire's Candide, in that Jolene seemed to move from one scandalous relationship to another, always searching for who she is meant to be. And every man, and a couple of women, take advantage of her charms at every turn. The last relationship almost kills her, but once again she hits the road and reinvents herself. Terrific acting, great scenery, and some truly awful plot turns kept this viewer engaged and at times enraged. And through it all, Ms Chastain radiates pure innocent beauty and grace even in the face of horrendous circumstances.

Dean M (gb) wrote: Al Pacino's lonely detective sets himself up as bait for a serial killer stalking newspaper dating ads and lands in the sack with slinky Ellen Barkin, commencing an effective game of nutjob-or-not? (as later ripped off by Basic Instinct). Achingly '90s in tone with a sultry sax-heavy jazz soundtrack to boot, the whodunnit is greatly assisted by Pacino toning down the mugging, John Goodman being... John Goodman and Barkin scorching up the screen, skillfully avoiding that old style over substance adage.

Garrett C (mx) wrote: I don't understand the acclaim for this film. As much as I love both black comedies and Chaplin, the film felt like a dull slog with an even duller ending.
