Jimmy's Hall

Jimmy's Hall

In the 1930s political activist Jimmy Gralton is deported from Ireland during the 'Red Scare'.

1932. Jimmy Gralton is back home in the Irish countryside after ten years of forced exile in the USA. His widowed mother Alice is happy, Jimmy's friends are happy, all the young people who enjoy dancing and singing are happy. Which is not the case of Father Sheridan, the local priest, nor of the village squire, nor of Dennis O'Keefe, the chief of the fascists. The reason is simple: Jimmy is a socialist activist. So when the "intruder" reopens the village hall, thus enabling the villagers to gather to sing, dance, paint, study or box, they take a dim view of the whole thing. People who think and unite are difficult to manipulate, aren't they? From that moment on they will use every means possible to get rid of Jimmy and his "dangerous" hall. . Mr N (de) wrote: Robots is alright. When I was young I was so excited to watch it cause of how it looks, but watching it now its not as good. Visually nice but a thin story.

Caleb M (ca) wrote: A pretty good, shmaltzy family drama with two good main performances from Lemmon and Danson. The story has some ups and downs, and the script/direction suffer from that extremly dated 80s feel, but Dad is an enjoyable film overall. Nice to see Ethan Hawk in an early role and J.T. Walsh is always fun.

Flying T (mx) wrote: This film uses the same premise as Fritz Leiber's novella "Our Lady of Darkness" and as such is a little bit obscure for mainstream audiences, even horror audiences. However, the concept, that book characters can come back to life - to the extent of resurrecting a psychotic black magician serial killer - is well worth the time to watch.Jenny Wright is at her fetching best in the main role, and her relationship with her cop boyfriend is well sketched. The horror and gore is spectacularly nasty whilst also being understated.
