This movie is an improvised drama based on the fate of 23 illegal immigrants who lost their lives in Morecambe in 2004 rather than a documentary and Broomfield himself remains firmly behind the camera. The result is his best, most affecting movie that points the finger firmly in the direction of those who make huge profits from people smuggling. I remember reading a number of articles on the subject when this movie had its theatrical release and the families of those who perished have been left with the burden of shouldering the remainder of the debts the 23 took on to secure their passage to the UK. The movie ends by stating that the British government has failed to allocate monies to compensate the families and appeals for donations to a fund set up for this purpose.Anyone who watches this from beginning to end will have absolute sympathy for the victims but is it surprising that the government has failed to step in? What sort of precedent would be set if compensation was paid out on behalf of non-citizens? The claims would be never-ending. And as for them broaching the subject with the Chinese government? A few hundred years have passed since such a thing was even theoretically feasible; it would be a diplomatic disaster. We have to be realistic and face the fact that in the present political and economic climate there's no way that this could happen however much we believe it would be the right thing to do.In casting the role of the lead character, Broomfield signed up a Chinese illegal immigrant, Ai Qin Lin and as the heart and soul of the story, her plight is all the more moving when you're aware that she's not acting and has been through every emotion she conveys for real. An eductional eye-opener for anyone who wants an insight into the how illegal immigrants are exploited and live (and die) in the UK.
