Jomalaye Jibanta Manush
A living human being's funny adventure in hell. The film focuses on the Hindi mythology of the God of Death and how his messengers snatches the life of any living being who has supposedly completed his days on the Earth. The story focuses on the mistake of two messengers who mistakenly pronounce a man dead even before he was supposed to be. Knowing of this goof-up, the god of death gets scared as no living person is supposed to enter 'Hell". Nevertheless, due to the good deeds performed by this human being while he was alive, he is given permission to travel to Heaven where he begins searching for his wife who had passed away sometime back.

Regrettably fatalistic it may seem, it is more of one of Woody Allen's predestined humour on love and devotion. The beach walk seems to be an amazing homage to Claude Lelouch's Un Homme et Une Femme almost half a century ago.

As her mother refuses to support her, she finds a way out by serving as an escort to well-off men. She seems o have a love affair with her pimp. As she spirals down to the downright prostitution, drugs and prison, she leaves home and tries to find a safe harbour with her pimp, who immediately sells her. Her escape and running to her mother is supposed to represent the happy end, but it fails to do so, because apparently, her rigid and hysterical mother is not going to make her any happier. Probably, the film was supposed to signify the dangers of a life of a prostitute, but since most people know that already, one looks for a different twist, and fails to find one.

It turned out to be faintly interesting, rather inspiring, and so soaked in ego and self-importance that I must offer the following advice: watch an actual Disney animated feature or a documentary on a subject that actually matters, and don't waste your time. It pains me to admit that a documentary about animation, even Disney animation, wasn't absolutely magical, but there it is. It does get points for nearly flawless production. It is Disney, after all.

Realise that it doesn't have a large budget or stellar cast. Honestly, 'Take Away' isn't too bad. It plays out like an 88-minute episode of 'Round the Twist'. It has a premise that's easy to follow and contains some decent humour. Stephen Curry is especially good in his role because he seems to be acting naturally. I found Vince Colosimo's performance to be mediocre. He has a very colourful personality, perhaps 'too' colourful. He tries to deliver every line boldly, when realistically, not every line needs to be delivered with gusto. He has intonation problems. Rose Byrne is good in this, and is now making the big bucks in the United States. Nathan Phillips can't act, but I'm sure he knows it. The film's ending is very displeasing. It was surely concocted without any serious thought and/or intelligence. It happens too quickly, plus it's highly unrealistic. Unrealistic elements are fine in a movie...if it's of the fantasy genre.

(us) wrote: Unfortunately, the CG characters were not quite realistic enough, and looked like zombies. I spent too much time noticing how creepy they all looked. But even if they characters were human, the movie was too predictable and uninteresting.
(mx) wrote: Stylistically this is Tsai's most conventional film, though it has all of his obsessions and themes with water, sex, the fractured nuclear family, and loneliness that he would present in later works. An atmosphere of melancholy and social disconnection constantly pervades the film. The omnipresence of water creates a sense of decay. Tsai presents a society where the youths communicate with arcade machines more than with each other. Another worthy note is that there's a pretty catchy synth score.

Jim Belushi is really funny in this. Although his character is a little extreme. Rob Lowe and Demi Moore have pretty good chemistry.

It also comes with a little bit of realization of the fears and the nightmares that haunt me -maybe that's why we want to describe his films as uncomfortables pieces-, but I don't mind. If I had to pick one movie that has done that, between all the repertoire I watched in the last months, it has to be Autumn Sonata.
(ca) wrote: The only reason to watch this film is because of a performance from early on in Steve McQueen's acting career. Other than that there is no reason to watch this thickheaded war movie. Frank Sinatra is terrible as the lead, the plot is thin and the ending is anti-climactic.
(nl) wrote: HAHA What a mess!! It's worth it for a couple of scenes, but the lack of plot and slightly off musical numbers take their toll. I love me some Anna Karina and Brialy and Serge and Marianne but this is just hilariously bad.
