Allan C (br) wrote: John Frankenheimer has a really mixed filmography that includes some true classics ("The Manchurian Candidate" or "Seven Days in May") but also includes some stinkers ("Dead Bang" or "Reindeer Games"). "Grand Prix" is something of a mixed bag in and of itself. The race scenes are brilliantly directed and stand up today as absolutely thrilling. The race scenes are wonderfully edited and the use of split screen is used to great effect. Unfortunately, the race scenes are interrupted by a tedious soap opera that surrounds the lives of the many drivers. There's a great cast, including the unfortunately dubbed Toshiro Mifune, but they can't salvage this boring and tedious script. Definitely worth watching for the races but absolutely must be seen widescreen, probably best on a giant television since you're not likely to catch it in a movie theater.
