(ag) wrote: Interesting and funny in a strange way, but unfortunately so slow paced I had to keep checking my watch and ask myself if finishing the film was worth it.

(es) wrote: Stephen Fry perfectly captures England and the decadent partying lifestyle that the young generation enjoy. Wild parties, plenty of drinking and cocaine (a.k.a. naughty salt), and the hapless hero's on again off again engagement to the girl of his dreams all revolving on money. Adam Symes's fortunes go up and down since his novel, on which is career and future is based, is confiscated at customs.Jim Broadbent gives the most colorful performance as the drunken major who is entrusted with 1000 pounds of Symes's so he can bet it on a long shot at a horse race. Stephen Campbell Moore, himself a lookalike of a young George VI, does well as Adam.Though Waugh's novel was set in 1930, it showed that he predicted the next war Britain would have to go through--the movie makes it clear that it's World War II. One of the best novel-based movies I've seen in a long time.
(kr) wrote: the critics are stupid for rating this poorly. this is a most hilarious buddy cop style movie with an all star cast. good from start to finish. if you haven't seen it then it's time to do so.

(it) wrote: Director Ray Enright makes the Audie Murphy B-movie western 'Kansas Raiders' look better than this Universal-International release has any right. Short, sweet, and simple... More recruits for the butcher brigade--Murphy plays Jesse James who rides with his brother and the Dalton boys to join up with Quantrill -- to continue the war in the Midwest!!

(ru) wrote: This is widely regarded as "minor", at best, Woody Allen and me not being a Woody Allen completist, this wasn't in my top list of priorities of films to be seen. But a friend of mine is a huge fan and highly recommended it to me. And he was right. This is delightful and funny parody/tribute to German expressionist films, specifically Fritz Lang and G.W. Pabst. It is gorgeously photographed and the mostly modern sounding dialogue at the backdrop of a period piece actually works quite well. I will agree that this is one of Woody's more underrated pieces.
