Kamome Diner

Kamome Diner

Where are we welcome? On a quiet street in Helsinki, Sachie has opened a diner featuring rice balls. For a month she has no customers. Then, in short order, she has her first customer, meets Midori, a gangly Japanese tourist, and invites her to stay with her, and meets Masako, a formal and ethereal middle-aged woman whose luggage has gone missing. The three women work in the diner, interact, and serve customers. A somewhat brusque man teaches Sachie to make delicious coffee, then he returns under other circumstances. Three neighborhood women inspect the empty diner every day; will anything bring them inside? The number of customers gradually increases, but the diner seems to attract only those with problems. Conversation with Sachie and the tasty food seem to resolve people's woes. We learn why Sachie serves rice balls; but why Finland?

Chris S (ag) wrote: Still good, just like the original. But that was the biggest problem, too. It was basically a copy of the original with not much new to make it worth watching both.

Michael R (br) wrote: Homoerotic bonding movie- Miike works out the mechanisms of misunderstanding, and someone always ends up dead! Stop rationalizing. Stop that!

Sam M (de) wrote: More nostalgic win. All the mob cliches and stereotype references are funny, and the writing is still strong. Forget about it.

Paul K (br) wrote: This is the best tearjerker dramedy I Have seen since "Lifted". Never knewabout it until today. Nice to see David Strathairn and Joseph Mazzello reunited after "The River Wild" in 1995. Jim Carrey cameo was a great surprise.

An IMDb rating of 8/10 (at the time when this is been written) only added to my eagerness to check it out. It was like any other courtroom drama (here it's court-martial). Nevertheless, it was worth a watch. It depicts how some brave lieutenants are used as scapegoats in order to seek peace!!! The case was presented marvelously & it was intriguing to see how the relatively inexperienced lawyer of the accused defends them. However, one can easily deduct that the outcome of the case was already decided upon before even the case has started. The movie was handled excellently; it was interesting thoroughly for what could otherwise have been a boring predictable docudrama. All the actors play their part quite impressively. If you're a fan of movies based on true events, you might like to check this out. It's not too great, but is worth a shot.

David F (nl) wrote: This Bond movie accounts for many of the recent parodies (like Austin Powers). The villain, Blofeld, played brilliantly by Donald Pleasance stroking a white cat, is peak Bond villain, the plot very globetrotting, and the space age SPECTRE plot as dumb as any other. Great music in this one, along with stylish settings.
