Khartoum

English General Charles George Gordon, a devout Christian, is appointed military governor of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan by the Prime Minister. Ordered to evacuate Egyptians from the Sudan, Gordon stays on to protect the people of Khartoum, who are under threat of being conquered by a Muslim army.

After an Egyptian army, commanded by British officers, is destroyed in a battle in the Sudan in the 1880's, the British government is in a quandary. It does not want to commit a British military force to a foreign war but they have a commitment to protect the Egyptians in Khartoum. They decide to ask General Charles "Chinese" Gordon, something of a folk hero in the Sudan as he had cleared the area of the slave trade, to arrange for the evacuation. Gordon agrees but also decides to defend the city against the forces of the Mahdi - the expected one - and tries to force the British to commit troops. . You can read more in Google, Youtube, Wiki

Sanmi O (br) wrote: Very powerful movie ambiguous movie. Role Kristen Stewart was born to play. Encapsulates the subtly and moral ambiguity that comes with warfare. Passes across overwhelming toll that inescapable situations bring.

J D (nl) wrote: I like all the actors, the genre and loved everything about it. I really don't know why it was panned. I can't get enough of these guys.

Bahman B (nl) wrote: The cartoon scenes were so off, but the subject was touching.

Yew L (es) wrote: A low budget film that's done superbly. The truths slowly reveal themselves subtly at the right pace, with a sudden blow at the end. Great soundtracks and atmospheric effects as well. I personally prefer the ending to be more close-ended though.

Stuart K (br) wrote: The brainchild of Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, who also produced and wrote this film, he would direct one segment in this 5 part portmanteau film along with Hanno Hfer, Constantin Popescu, Ioana Uricaru and Razvan Marculescu. This film shows the lighter side to Romania when it was in it's darkest days of Nicolae Ceauescu's regime. It manages to be gently amusing and well made too. The first piece is The Legend of the Official Visit, where a rural town prepares for Ceauescu passing through, and the plans that the Mayor (Teodor Corban), but it goes awry. Then, in The Legend of the Party Photographer, there's a problem when a photographer (Avram Birau) gets a photo of Ceauescu, which leads to a newspaper recall. In The Legend of the Chicken Driver, truck driver Grigore (Vlad Ivanov) makes a bit on the side by stealing eggs from the chickens he delivers. In The Legend of the Greedy Policeman, a policeman Alexa (Ion Sapdaru) acquires a live pig, and tries to kill it for food, then in The Legend of the Air Sellers, Crina (Diana Cavallioti) and Bughi (Radu Iacoban) diddle people out of glass bottles and jars. It's well made, and it's a good look at how people got by and prevailed in Ceauescu's Romania, it was a simpler way of life, but it was one where people were brought down by this brutal regime. Despite what people went though under Ceauescu, it's a wonder there's any laughs in this film at all, but even though these tales are legends, they're still good to watch.

darth v (gb) wrote: It's actually not that bad. Very interesting concept and nice special effects. Of course if you are a fan of Nick Cage, then who cares.

Adam S (br) wrote: Like his contemporaries, Belgium's Dardenne brothers, Lodge Kerrigan paints a portrait of immediacy, desperation, personal struggle, and social destitution with an unflinching verite style that borders on the abstract. Here his flawed protagonist, a nervous, unkempt wanderer, played by Damien Lewis, lives an impossible existence, mumbling from bus station to subway platform, looking for a daughter that may or may not have been kidnapped years ago. It's a fruitless search, but Kerrigan has sympathy for the struggling man, following his quest with urgency and a painful recognition of a growing mental instability.

Rodney E (es) wrote: Not funny and just an annoyingly bad movie. Danny DeVito isn't bad but Casey Affleck is one of the worst actors around. What's with marble mouth? How does that guy get work? Tons of other stupid comedies has the same tone as this movie and this is nothing new. I saw this on TV before and turned it off not far into it..Saw it again recently and figured "why not? I'm doing absolutely nothing", but Drowning Mona does suck

William W (fr) wrote: A really fun film that I found in my Maureen O'Hara TCM 4-pack that I highly recommend if you enjoy films from that era. I like the two films I've seen so far from Arzner, who was one of the earliest and most successful of female directors and I believe the first openly lesbian one--the other work I've seen of hers is the great pre-Code look at alcoholism, 'Merrily We Go to Hell'.This is great if you either like musicals from the era, are a Maureen O'Hara or Lucille Ball enthusiast (holy, she was unbelievably a knockout in her early filmic days!) or are simply curious about the works of early female and/or lesbian directors. Arzner--at least in the two films I have seen from her thus far--showed she truly deserved to be successful in the industry.

Jamin M (nl) wrote: Wow. Audiences didn't really like this film, huh? I don't see many thing wrong with it. It's not perfect, but I thought vit was good. The story is well-written, the acting is superb, and it really pulls your heartstrings. I love the struggle that Jimmy had to go through. I felt so bad for him. The character himself is also good. Eminem did pretty well for his first time acting. I also like the accurate portrayal of Detroit. This film made me feel even more bad for Eminem. The movie also powerful and very inspirational. I absolutely adore "Lose Yourself". You really get sucked into Jimmy's journey and you really want him to succeed and take his opportunity. The only problem I sort of have is that Jimmy and Alex's relationship felt a bit rushed, but it's not that bad. Powerful and emotional, 8 Mile is a pretty good triumph

Derek K (ru) wrote: Evidently the nail gun killer find (her?him?)self hilarious, as the swelling robotic chuckles after every murder indicate. The robot voice is pretty amazing, but the killer's sense of humor is pretty lame "Time to do your NAILS, you have look pretty IN HELL"
