I kind of hated the director character (in a bad way, he was annoying and the actor was very unconvincing, especially in a mockumentary) but his presence did lead to one hilarious smash cut. It's all dumb as hell, but pretty entertaining.

(jp) wrote: What a guilty pleasure! You can list out 100 reasons to dislike this film (for its small-scale, hybrid, fragmented) but you can't deny it is truly entertaining. The duo Woody Harrelson & Antonio Banderas are amazing, Harrelson in particular.

(ru) wrote: Gualteiro Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi's exploitation classic set the mold for the "mondo" genre and remains one of the best. An exhilarating whirl of lurid sensationalism (though horrifically dated in its cultural attitudes) told with surprisingly inventive and witty editing and camerawork, all set to Riz Ortolani's superb score. Jacopetti and Prosperi would get more ambitious with their later mondo efforts, but this is a classic of its kind.

Long overdue. This must infuriate environmentalists...which, in turn, makes me jubilant. The oil fire was very well filmed. Great drama. I never realized just how great a performer Tracy was. He's so effortless & understated, that it can be easily missed. But truly, his performance is magnificent. Colbert is excellent too. And Gable is just his usual superstar self. There were a few nods to 'It Happened One Night' & 'Gone With The Wind,' which I absolutely adored. In a way, the most touching unrequited love story of all. The high-speed fight scenes are kind of unintentionally funny-looking. Tracy's last speech resonates, especially today.

(us) wrote: A very interesting movie that I'm glad I took the time to finally watch. Garbo is simply mesmerizing and seems to be on her own planet. Weird that so many of the stars turned down the roles at first and had to be coaxed/persuaded to take part--they're absolutely perfect. It's excellent at capturing a moment in time, with people at vastly different life circumstances, at a top hotel in Germany's greatest city, between the two great wars. Enthusiastically recommended.
