Despite its innocent premis this film has a darker undertone as the children are faced with realities such as death and betrayal. The film is a joy to watch without the usual schmalz of such a movie.

At the beginning of this movie, I thought Toshiro Mifune was incredibly miscast as the father of the clan, but he really turns in a tremendous performance showing huge range as an actor. It's not the best Kurosawa film, but it does have its moments that really stick with you. The narrative structure, though sometimes suffering from abbreviated scenes and awkward transitions, is one that frames the film really well and Takashi Shimura serves really well as an audience stand-in.
