Jesse O (ca) wrote: If you like your films with a lot of treacly sentimentality, then boy is this the film for you. It's a film that is like this from beginning to end. Basically the film has to do with this brother and sister, who has a hump on her back that is a source of embarrassment to her brother, and how their "relationship" develops throughout the hardships they face. The movie would've been fine if it actually tried to believably portray this brother/sister relationship, but instead it chooses to go the sentimental and it makes the little girl look like a muppet. It doesn't help that the film's score sounds like it was recorded from one of those very cheap keyboards that can make different types of sounds. The film isn't particularly funny either, the drama, of course, is terrible. It's just constant sentimentality and I can't stand it, it's not good storytelling. The acting was at least decent, but other than that there's not much to like about the film. Perhaps I overrated this film now that I think about it, but it isn't bad per se. It just relies on constant melodrama and that gets in the way of this being a good film.

Jon C (it) wrote: another timeless classic by Tim Burton and an infectious turn by Johnny Deppthe film is full of wondrous music, bright, vivid colors and a sweet, gothic toneunlike 'Batman' or 'Beetlejuice' Tim Burton treats this main character as an innocent pilgrim coming into a world he never knew about beyond his own backyard, he looks scary but has a big heartthe greatest thing about him are his unusually razor-sharp hands yet they're also his biggest obstacle when it comes to blending in with the rest of the neighborsof course at one point someone says if he didn't have this unique quality about him he wouldn't be special anymore which is a great thing to embraceWinona Ryder as his love interest, Kim begins to see the kind innocence he holds deep insideit's everyone else that has a hard time accepting someone new like Edward from the nosy neighbors to Kim's jerk boyfriendI love Depp and Ryder so muchthe movie actually grew on me as it further developed because it felt like a modern Frankenstein tale, if the wrong buttons are pushed then the potential happiness can easily crumble a great flick that remains a piece of movie magic
