Mark Z (us) wrote: A thought provoking look at laws and social norms that govern the age appropriateness of relationships. There is a definite "eew!" factor, though the controversial issue is approached intelligently. The story is told from the lovers' point of view, which leads to a sympathetic presentation of the relationship. However, it is clearly demonstrated how the much older Eban uses his life experience advantage to seduce an emotionally neglected teenager. This film manages - barely - to avoid outright advocacy for a lower age of consent and even portrays Eban as painfully maladjusted. Still, the question persists: Why can?t two people, regardless of their ages, be in love? Eban & Charley is a worthwhile film that dares to venture into a murky gray area and is sure to inspire lively discussion.A thought provoking look at laws and social norms that govern the age appropriateness of relationships. Ebert correctly considered it an anti-comedy - if you're expecting a comedy as you watch White, it'll look inept. There's more going on here. Much more.
