(us) wrote: Brilliant. Thought it would be awful (reviews suggest it's a bit toilet) but it's non stop laughs and happiness. Only disappointment was a lack of Burt Kwok or Finsbury Park, otherwise it's got some great comedians to enjoy. If you have a sense of humor you'll love it, if you just want to over analyze it then you need to chill out more!

It's very simple for films like these, with non-professional actors, to feel awkward and fake and it's a real credit to Andrew Bujalski that he managed to get such heartfelt emotions through out this film. Not even Gus Van Sant in Paranoid Park could get similar performances. I wasn't quite ready to jump in to this film and when it started I was nervous at the raw soundtrack (most, if not all, sounds coming from on set mic meaning characters off screen generally sound off screen) and the out of focus camera work but almost immediately I started to fall in love with the characters. Tilly and Maggie Hatcher, sisters in real life, play sisters in the film and they're brilliant, especially Tilly. When I read the plot on imdb I figured it be about how Jeannie is in a wheelchair while her twin Lauren isn't but it really isn't about that. It's just about real people dealing with real people issues and I loved pretty much every minute.

And then there are the other parts surrounding those parts that make you think about what the hell went wrong with the screenwriting. Unthinkable has the FBI team up with an interrogator who's methods are barbaric, though they get results. It really seems like this film revels in shock value. That would be fine, but the "shocks" come in the form of lapses in judgement and jumps in logic. A character will be dead set against an action until the plot needs them to change their mind, without any second thoughts or guesses. This happens all too often, and it even leads to an exceptionally laughable and poorly thought out ending. In terms of acting, that is also all over the place. The primary three hold their own, but their poor writing has them bounce all over in terms of motivations. There are also some visual effects, but they looked like bargain bin syfy channel effects. Luckily, just like this film, they are fleeting and quickly forgotten.

(br) wrote: Um...there are no fat people in Fat City. I would like a refund please for false advertising. I watched this on Netflix which is 8 bucks a month. So far I've watched 2 movies this month plus some cartoons. That would be at least a 3 buck refund right now. But, I suppose, I should wait until the end of the month and tally up everything I watch and then divide it by 8. It's only fair. Still, fat people should be in a movie called Fat City!
