Cynthia S (gb) wrote: Penny Dreadful is not a great horror film, I've seen better. But what it is is a pretty good psychological thriller. Penny dreadful is a well made, and well acted horror film that will satisfy any horror lovers urge for a good time. This movie is a dark and gritty psychological thriller that takes you into the mind and soul of a frightened and traumatized young girl, and her fight to stay alive. This film explores three main themes, 1. terror and what it can do to you if you let it control you. 2: What certain events in your life can do to change who you are and what you are. 3: What the darkness of a quiet woods can do to turn your worst fears into a reality. Probably my favorite Horrorfest film.
AN N (jp) wrote: Seriously bad. I don't know what the prerequisites to be in this movie were, but "can't act" might have been one of them perhaps? Strange, weird and sloooowwww ... the acting is so bizarrely unnatural and stiff. And the chemistry between the MCs is so ambiguous and confusing I never quite knew what was going on and things just seemed to happen out of the blue without warning. The humorous interludes fell so flat it was kinda embarrassing actually. The angst interjected into this story was artificial and cringworthy. The folksy portrayal of people and places was somewhat strained, cliched and almost annoying. Oh god ... stay away from this one ...
Johann M (gb) wrote: Described as a delightful romantic comedy, it certainly is, even hilarious. Its 7 Academy Award wins including Best Picture in 1999 are well awarded. Shakespeare fans must like it due to its references to Romeo and Juliet and Twelfth Night.

Anna B (ca) wrote: At first I thought the Italian-ness of it would be a problem for me, as I've often struggled with other Italian films of the era (why did they persist with that consistently awful dubbing? It's like nails on a chalkboard). But I was surprised at how much it sucked me in, and by the second act I was pretty thoroughly hooked. There are some extraordinary sequences (that denouement!), some wonderfully nuanced shifting alliances, and a languid pace that actually works to its advantage. Great stuff.
Eric H (nl) wrote: This film has an interesting premise but not fully developed as it should had been. Oscar-Winners:Washington and Crowe keeps your interest with this film. This wild, loud, action-fest is long on violence and short on sense. This watchable film is a mess and Crowe seems to be having a ball playing this Computerized Futuristic Killer. Ex-Porn Star:Traci Lords appears in a Cameo. Watch this move because the movie is old enough that we can laugh and cringe at its nineties-ness! Enjoy!
