Marko J (ag) wrote: Another study of Finnishness by Aki Kaurismki, this film uses a beautiful colour palette that makes you suspect that one day the cult director might make an exception and add a happy ending.
Frances H (ag) wrote: Gut wrenching in it's restrained handling of it's subject matter, beautiful cinematography and excellent performances, a hauntingly done rendition of the kind of story that has often been told.

His life is falling apart as it is and is having a hard time handling Molly. He takes a chance and has a risky surgery done on her brain so that she can be normal. She starts learning about things and is very smart but things start going downhill. Aaron eckhart and Elizabeth shue give memorable performances in this touching and often funny story about life and love.

Allan C (ca) wrote: I'm a sucker for a good prison drama. In this film artist Ben Gazzara is sent to prison for killing a toy store owner over a teddybear for his child. Once in prison there is the usual shakedowns, con men, mean & decent prison guards, and assorted colorful characters, but it's all done so well and Gazzara is so compelling in the lead that it elevates the pretty standard formula prison story into something much better. The excellent cast includes Stuart Whitman, Ray Walston, Vincent Price, Rod Steiger, Broderick Crawford, Sammy Davis Jr., and the always great Timothy Carey who has a very memorable first scene. There's also a great jazzy score by Leonard Rosenthal. This film was apparently loosely based upon a true story.

Robert B (kr) wrote: The Congress strikes me as a film that may well gain an appreciation in years to come. One can tell that a high level of competence and creative ambition went into making the film. The product is substantial and needs more than one viewing to fully digest. I have seen it once, I think it works, and will likely requeue it at some point. Fans of the fantastical, intellectual, and mysterious should definitely give The Congress a view.
