v h (jp) wrote: Jerichow opens with a guy named Thomas attending his mother's funeral in the former East German town of Jerichow. No sooner does the funeral end than he's accosted by a couple of guys to whom he apparently owes a lot of money. He claims poverty but they follow him back to his mom's house and find a wad of cash he's hidden away to use to rehab the place. Then one of them whacks him over the head for good measure. When Thomas finally comes to the next morning, he's still poor but now he also has a splitting headache. He manages to find a job on a farm picking cucumbers. There's this tractor, see, and it has an arm sticking out of either side on which a bunch of workers lie on their stomachs picking the fruit as it slowly drives across the field. It looked like a fun job for about five minutes. On his way home from work, Thomas happens upon this Turkish guy named Ali who's just driven partway into a lake while driving drunk. Thomas helps the Ali out and when he ends up having his license revoked a few days later, he accepts a job as his driver. Ali owns a bunch of snack shops along the highway. Thomas' job involves loading up the truck with new stock and driving Ali to the various shops along the route so he can drop off the products and collect the money. It means he no longer gets paid for lying on his stomach but the money is better. Ali has this hot blonde wife named Laura who works with him in the business. Ali isn't a particularly good looking guy: big nose, receding hairline, sort of a jowly face, like a younger, thinner Tony Soprano. Thomas, on the other hand is Laura's aesthetic equal and then some. Ali invites Thomas on a picnic with him and his wife during which he gets drunk and practically demands that Thomas and Laura slow dance together. Then he leaves them alone and goes for a walk, which kicks off a not particularly discreet affair. Not particularly unexpected either, since Ali has previously noticed Thomas checking out his wife. Turns out that Laura's relationship with Ali isn't all wine and roses, or even raki and kebabs, as the case may be, but she's in a position where she can't just leave him for her impoverished new lover. See where this is going? I've learned by reading a plot summary written by someone who is clearly more well-read than I, that Jericho is loosely based on the 1934 novel "The Postman Always Rings Twice", which in turn has been made into four films, an opera, and a play. The 1946 version is apparently a classic. Jerichow may not be a classic, but it's a good way to spend a couple of tension-filled hours, if you like that sort of thing.

Stephen C (au) wrote: The Final film in Hammers canon before its rebirth in 2009 ,is ok but compared to the Devil rides out is missing the deft touch of a Terence Fisher or a Freddie Francis. The plot is interesting based as it is on a Dennis Wheatley ,but the trouble is you can see that by this time Hammer were crippled by a shortage of funds and so the proposed big bang ending was scrapped in favour of a more perfunctory and unsatifsying ending.Richard Widmark does ok but rumours of his on set grumpiness are all to eveident as the film progresses.Once again the acting Honours go the Christopher Lee as the Demonic Father Michael a struck off preist who wants to bring the devil back to earth by using the Nun played by Natassja Kinski and a rather unsavoury blood soaked baby thing which ruins any tension by being so laughable. Its a Shame Hammer went out like this and oe only hopes that the studios return is a permanent one as i love all the Hammer films of old.

Allan C (fr) wrote: I'm not a huge musical fan, so not too many appeal to me, but his one is quite charming. Robert Morse plays a scheming window washer who worked his way up the corporate ladder, featuring many songs and dances along the way. The main suspense of the film is if the company will find out that Morse doesn't really know what he's doing and really isn't working very hard. The film also had an added level of meta fun since Morse is now best known for portraying Bert Cooper of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce on AMC's "Mad Men," itself a 1960s story set in a big company. As an aside, that show actually let Morse's final scene in the show be a musical number that was just wonderful. But back to this film, Michele Lee plays Morse's likable love interest and Rudy Vallee plays the company boss. David Swift directed this lavish musical, but he never really did anything like it again, even though this film was quite successful. He spent most of his career directing forgettable Disney films and TV episodes. If you're a fan of musicals and even if you're not, this film is quite winning an entertaining.

Brian H (ca) wrote: There are really only two reasons to watch this movie: the exciting first pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers AND the final dance sequence featuring dancers on a high flying plane. Other than that, the film's plot is non-existent, the musical numbers (besides that final sequence) are rather boring (even the over-hyped Carioca), and the film is definitely dated. Fred and Ginger are fun to watch and its clear why they became stars. I wish I could say the same for the romantic leads, Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond. They are both rather bland and I didn't believe their love triangle for a second. There are moments that are worth it, but overall there are much better old musicals to check out.

Wade W (it) wrote: Miracles From Heaven is one of the best faith-based films I have ever seen. It has all the horses it needs to succeed, and it does. Garner bring a heartwarming performance and so does the rest of the solid cast, including the kids. It's a must-own for families and couples. The film is encouraging, uplifting and well-produced. It's nowhere near perfect, but with God and a miracle at the center, it's hard not to like.
