A swirling, impressionistic portrait of an artist who regretted nothing, writer-director Olivier Dahan's La Vie en Rose stars Marion Cotillard in a blazing performance as the legendary French icon Edith Piaf. From the mean streets of the Belleville district of Paris to the dazzling limelight of New York's most famous concert halls, Piaf's life was a constant battle to sing and survive, to live and love. Raised in her grandmother's brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee (Gerard Depardieu), who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France's immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th Century.
The movie is the screen biopic of tragic French songstress Edith Piaf, a superstar once raised as a young girl by her grandmother in a Normandy bordello, then discovered on a French street corner. . You can read more in Google, Youtube, Wiki
Jenna L (mx) wrote: An obviously low budget (some parts are hard to hear due to improper sound staging) drama that is carried by strong performances, espcially from the supporting cast. I found myself enjoying it and drawn in, and it did stick with me afterwards and make me think. A drama well-done.

Budge B (it) wrote: A film which, like "Emmanuelle" (1974), features beautiful people in sultry settings, challenging the proscriptions of social mores, "Ma Mre" differs in its narrative sophistication and intellectual arrogance. Isabelle Huppert plays a mother, perhaps past her prime, but still beautiful, elegant, eminently desirable, and sufficiently rich to be bored with the need to concern herself with life's trivia. Her adulterous husband dies, her son (Louis Garrel) returns from boarding school. They inhabit a lotus eating world in the Canaries. Huppert tires of her sexual experimentation with her own mistress and becomes consumed with desire for her boy. She begins by allowing other women to seduce him, coyly watching, gradually being drawn in to more physical contact. It's beautifully filmed, beautifully performed - Isabelle Huppert is outstanding in pretty much anything she does - but you're left wondering what was the point. In fact you find yourself fast forwarding past the sex scenes in frantic search of a story or meaning. Given the quality of the production, you wonder why these resources were squandered on a pretentious shocker and not on the making of a film with real significance.Director Christophe Honore has been compared to Catherine Breillat, but "Ma Mre" is a superficial effort to push the boundaries compared to the humanistic sophistication of Breillat. If this is an attempt to demonstrate that Western consumerism and wealth have sanitised us to emotion and feeling, cast us adrift in an anomic state desperate for both meaning and sensation, then it might have been better to explore the themes by setting the story in a run-down tenement block, making the poverty of consumerism that more emphatic. As it stands, "Ma Mre" has its moments, but moves with too turgid a pace to fully engage your sympathy, your attention, or your willingness to believe that it has any significance in exploring human interaction and relationships.

Nick P (ca) wrote: Some amazing idea, but overly crowded with things that are over exageration of things that don't make sense. With more time spent on a better script writer, some better actors, and a good script supervisor and this film could have had the potentional to be a 5-star action flick. Great story, and brilliant ideas, honestly.
Greg P (de) wrote: WOW! ..... WOW!!!! This was a HORRIBLE movie. I can't even describe to you how bad this movie is. You can tell that it is trying to be a comedy but it fails in every step of the way!. This movie is like that weird socially awkward friend that keeps trying to tell jokes. You know when he hits the punch line and you know when you are supposed to laugh but everything he says is not funny. Every second of this movie is filled with failed joke after failed joke. You start to feel bad for it at some point. Eventually, the movie becomes a train wreck. You know that it's the worst thing you've ever seen but you can't keep yourself from looking at it. I kinda feel bad for trashing this movie. I mean it's so bad, that when I do trash the movie, I feel like I'm picking on a disabled person or something. I would actually recommend viewing this movie. Not as entertainment but as an educational piece. You can view this movie to educate you on how absolute garbage is made. I'm sorry, that's actually an insult to garbage. I really wanted to give this movie 0 out of 5 stars but this website only lets you give .5 out of 5 stars. I wish I had Spock's Vulcan mind melding powers so I could actually show everyone how much of an atrocity this movie is. Words cannot describe it. It must be seen to be believed!!!
Scott A (de) wrote: Should've called this movie ME!!! I'm not as big as the kid, but my life in high school was just as pathetic. I will never understand why this movie got no love. It's one of my favorites and I WISH someone would put out a DVD or Blu-Ray already!Talbert is quite good and Owen is the comedy relief as his buddy. Richards is gorgeous in this and is the girl all geeks like me wanted in High School. I believe this was Scott's last film too and he's very good as the Grandpa. Van Der Beek, yes Dawson's Creek himself, is such a great bully too. You'll probably want to pop him in the face a half dozen times. There is a few very sad scenes in there too, and the soundtrack is FANTASTIC!!!!
