Ihab A (es) wrote: "He's there the phantom of the opera, beware, the phantom of the opera", that lyrics from the title song has been haunting me ever since i have seen this musical for the first time in london in july anc was completly blown away by it, i enjoyed every single moment of it and immediately ranked as the greatest entertainment experience ever, even leaving major hollywood flicks in the dust (it did in the box office where it's worldwide revenues exceed the 5.3 billion dollar mark in it's production runs worldwide in 25 countries).after seeing it and dazzled by it, iheard of the 2004 film by somewhat mediocre director joel schumacher, but was sure it was going to be great but other than the opening sequence i really didn't like that film and to this day im trying as much as i can to erase it out of my memory, and then, luckily for me came the special royal albert hall performance, celebrating the show's 25th anniversary in london (the original production), and just as i expected, it completly overshadowed the film, which is now absurd for any fan of the musical when you have this performance.filmed live in fornt of over 5000 audience it was absolutly amazing, both dramtically and visually (although i have some criticism of the effects, which i will get to later on). the cast for this performance were all perfect on every level (except perhaps meg's performance, but she really is relatively the least important main character in the musical, so it matters very little), but other than her everyone else was perfect. ramin karilmloo gave an excellent phantom, presenting a figure that is both threatening and delicate as butter, and sierra boggess's voice was beautiful in every way possible. raul's character was well performed, although he is somewhat annoying (but that's how the character is supposed to make you feel so he pretty much nailed it).the effects were excellent in this performance, but not perfect like the performances, one of the major things that didn't really impress me was the fact that they used huge screens instead of actual sets, which kind of diminishes the stage magic the regular stage production had (such as the scene when the phantom appears in christines mirror was slightly impressive but not as nearly as "wowoing" as the original production, also when the phantom escorts christine to his layer the breathtaking candlesticks coming from underneath the stage are presented on screen which isn't really impressive but still wasn't bad in anywasy). but the one effect that was actually bad (not only bad, but awful) was the chandeleir, in the prologue for instance instead of being lifted over the audience it is already hung up and just traveled a few meters from it whre it was hung fisrt ro the new location above the audience which would have been kind of boring to watch in the audience but on DVD the cameras focused on the golden statues of angels and the orchestra, which were perfect footage to be attached the wonderful overture, but what really made me mad about it was what is supposedly the climax of the musical when the chandeleir is suppose to fall on the stage and crash (looked amazing in the regular production at her majestey's theatre), but here instead of crashing the chandeleir for some reason just shoots out some fireworks and it's lights are turned off!!!, when i saw that for the first time i thought to myself "are you kidding me, what the f**k? wow the chandeleir just released fireworks, what a disaster, the opera house is ruined now for sure", as much as i love this performance i can't but say that the chandeleir "crash" here was downright stupid.nonetheless, the production is still very fantastic (or should i say phantastic). the ending when andrew lloyd webber the composer (the music is so perfect that it goes without saying with the advantages of this production), welcomes back all the original cast to the stage was a highly emotional moment, and the best was saved to last, the original christine sarah brightman, who is now a very successful singer (best sellnig soprano of all time) sang the title songs with 5 phantoms from the past present and future, which was awesome, even though her performance wasn't perfect, due to the fact that you can hear her breaths between every line, she still has an amazaingly strong voice, and while she didn't gave her best singing at the relativley easy part of the song (the beginning), she nailed the hard part (the ending of the song when she starts singing opera at a high note that consistenlty rises until she hits the highest note) perfectly, followed by the phantoms performing the music of the night also perfectly.overall this, is the second best thing for an fan of the musical next seeing the production onstage, and as i said earlier overshadows the cinematic film adaptation completely and a must-own DVD for any fan of the musical, or a fan of musicals in general.
